Ok, so I recently bought a cheap B.C. Rich form a local guy for a good price just to have something to screw around on. I was offered more than I paid for it by a couple people so I don't think I got hurt on it and I'm happy with the guitar. Now he sends me a txt saying that he is going to get a new guitar and asks if I am interested in his old one. He said it's a Jackson Dinky DK2 but after looking at the pic I think it's actually a DK2M. Here's a pic of the actual guitar:

Here's a pic of what the whole guitar looks like I swiped off the 'Net:

The maple fretboard is what I noticed first. It looks a little odd at first but the idea is growing on me. Also it has Seymour Duncan pickups, which everything I have found shows that a DK2 comes with EMGs and a rosewood fretboard. Either way it doesn't seem like a big deal since the price seems good to me at $275. He said he's had it about 2 years, bought it new and I know form the other guitar I bought from him that he takes care of his gear. So anyway, he wants $275, I have the cash on hand but I was sort of saving it for tires for the Ramcharger, but this seems like a deal that's too good to pass up. I was going to get a Jackson Dinky before I got my B.C. Rich Virgin a long time ago so I've sort of wanted one for a while, but don't really need two guitars. Still, I'm more than a little sure I can sell my current B.C. Rich for what I gave for it which will recoup most of the money spent on this Jackson. I don't really need it but I admit I would like to get back to a guitar like the Virgin I once had with a Floyd Rose Tremolo, dual humbuckers and a locking nut. So guys, do you think I should spring for it?

EDIT: I should also mention that the average price I have found for a new DK2M is $600 and used is generally $400-$500.

I am not up on the current models like I used to be, so I can't comment on the models, but speaking strickly from opinion.....I always hated BC Rich's and loved Jacksons. Jackson's have always been my dream guitars (the handmade American ones of course).

I'm assuming this is an older model that isn't on their site anymore? If so, you can go to this dreamworld :p for info. http://www.jcfonline.com/

x2.
The only thing I wouldn't like about the maple fretboard is if it was finished. My first Strat had the maple fretboard and it would get slick playing gigs. I now have a "Texas" factory hot rod Strat with the rosewood neck and seymour duncan invader humbucker and love it.

I'll have to look into that.  I normally don't mind a slick frets to a certain extent due to the speed of the music I play, but I also lack a little bit of control due to some nerve damage that makes my fingertips a bit numb.  I'll be able to borrow the guitar and try it out before I buy it so I'll see if it poses a problem for me.  I only write and play music for myself and refuse to join a band so sweaty hands are a rare occurrence for me, lol.

i think you'd find an unfinished fretboard faster.
we played mostly speed metal/thrash.

i always loved the Jacksons.
i liked the flat fretboards of the Gibsons but there a bit wide.
i liked the Fenders because they were thinner but rounded.
i loved the Jacksons because they were flat and thin.  my hands aren't small but the thinner flat neck/fretboard just felt better.  I couldn't afford ia Jackson then so my favorite axe was a modified Charvel model 3 with an Invader p/u and a floyd rose.  Venamen's music/Rockville, MD built it.  I grew up in suburban MD (DC metro)
never needed more than one pickup bacause it was either full speed or between songs.

haven't shopped guitars in awhile, but i can't recall seeing a Jackson with a maple fretboard.
looks cool.

Honestly, there are too many egos around here with the local musicians. It's a small town and there aren't many of us but we are all convinced we are the best at what we do. I have a similar ego, though I know I am not the best guitarist. I am probably the best/fastest double bass drummer around here, but that's beside the point. ;D I simply like to play. I don't play in front of other people, and I rarely play with others because they all want to play popular songs and such. I was never taught guitar, I picked it up myself so I tend to be a bit odd. I don't enjoy playing anything other than my own music. I will occasionally learn a riff or something from a popular song but that's usually just to learn the technique and add it to my stuff. I usually turn on my amp, warm up a bit and then just play one long wandering "thing". I have several riffs I always come back to but most of the time I'm trying to make up something new. I used to record me playing because I could never remember half the stuff to play it again but then ended up with a dozen or so tapes that I didn't feel like taking the time to listen to, lol.

for 275 though i would definately check the action on it and the neck/body for cracks.
(though i'm confident ur all over this)
I started with a Epiphone with the wide neck and that's sort of what I am used to. My buddy bought a Ibanez and loved it but I could never play it due to the neck being so slim. He later bought a B.C. Rich Virgin and didn't like it because it had a wide neck like the Gibson's and I later bought it. It was my favorite guitar until it got stolen. I guess I'll have to try out this Jackson to be sure it's comfortable for me. I remember playing a few Jackson's in stores over the years and don't remember them feel odd like the Ibanez guitars so I hope it won't be a big deal. I'm dying to get back to a fairly "normal" shaped body as this B.C. Rich I have now looks cool, but is uncomfortable to sit and play.

I generally stick with the dual bridge pickup for most of my playing but I like to have a humbucker at the neck too for fooling around, which I do a lot of. I never liked the sound of a Strat style guitar with the two singles. It just never "felt" right I guess.

On the checking over of the guitar, it's a must. The guy treats his gear good but the last one I got from him had been taken apart and put back together a little wrong, lol. I have to adjust the action and flip the pickup bracket back around the right way when I got it. I can do most minor repairs and tweaks and can swap in pickups and tremolos and stuff so I should be able to check it over pretty good. My main concerns are the pivots on the tremolo and the neck. I think the cheap price reflects the fact that he's only $275 from getting his next guitar and he's liquidating some gear to get it. He's also trying to sell me a few pedals and junk but I don't use effects much anymore.

I can understand that. ;D

I'm not much help with guitar choices for the type of music you play. I'm a fender strat, teli, G&L or ESP kinda guy but I only strum. ;)

I guess that's why I love my Ovation 12 string so much. It makes me sound better than I am. :p

Somewhere around here I have an old Ibanez Metal Charger pedal but I think that's all I have anymore and I don't even know where it is.  Back before all my stuff got stolen, I had a Digitech RP-1 effects board that was fun to play with.  It was too noisy to use for any sort of show or recording but it suited me just fine.  The little Crate amp I have now has an Overdrive effect on it and a Chorus of some sort that I play with occasionally.  I guess if I get this Jackson I'll be in the market for a better amp next.  It never ends.  Much like working on trucks.  ;D

I've always been in the same boat, I've got two Charvels and I love the hell out of them. One is (I believe) and '89 Predator, it used to have Fate's Warning's autographs on it, but they're long gone. The other is a mid 80's Model 5XX, neck-through with a fire crackle finish...SHUWIIIINNNGG! ;D

That's precisely what I don't need, lol. Completely useless for the style of music I play, but would be cool to mess around with. That's sort of the problem with me, I like to experiment with stuff but all the exotic guitars and effects cost too much money to get just to fool around with, lol.

If I had my choice (and tons of cash), I would probably get another B.C. Rich Virgin:

It would be a custom model with neck through the body construction, angled reverse headstock and not that funky '70s looking thing, diamond inlays, Floyd Rose tremolo, EMG 81 humbucker bridge pickup, EMG 81-X active humbucker neck pickup and a bright white finish.

Kendall I think you and Lanty need a guitar like Robin's in the pic. A 12 string teli. {drool}

Meh, I'm with Lanty on that.

My dream guitar would be a handmade Jackson, neck-through, a bound ebony fretboard, m.o.p. sharkfin inlays, two Seymour Duncan humbuckers, flame maple top and NO whammy bar......I just don't use them much anymore.

I'm in no way opposed to a Gibson Les Paul 1969 version.  ;)
