I have a 1979 w150. My left front hub is worn, and I cannot find a replacement. I believe the replacement is a Raybestos 4942R but I can't find anybody who has one. New, used, nothing. Anybody have any sources?

Its a big problem.

I would post a want add in the classifieds. But it just as well can be the inside of the knuckle that is worn.

Finding a new one is slim, but I think you know that already.

The best long term solution is to swap in a newer axle, but then you need different rims, and should also do the rear axle, so you do not need to carry two spares.

Or you could go more heavy duty, and get a set of 8 lug axles, and wheels.

If there is not a lot of play, you can stipple (use a metal punch, and punch a ton of dimples, It rasies the surface a tad) the inside of the two bearing surfaces,

A machine shop could weld up and re machine the hub and/ or knuckle, but that will not be cheap.

How bad is yours ? And welcome.

Ok. Thanks SuperBurban and RCCADMAN. It is definitely the hub. The race for the outer bearing in the knuckle is in so tight it won't come out. I tried "sizing" (lingo from the manual) the rotor with a punch but there is too much play. I even welded on some material and ground it so the new bearing fit tight, but it is not good enough. It was meant to be a temporary fix since I couldn't machine it properly. Still some play in the wheel after I drove it for a day. I will post an add and maybe go to a machine shop if that doesn't work. Thanks again!

I had a wheel bearing explode on me 120 years ago. It ate the bearing race pretty bad. I ended up going to a wrecking yard looking for a another axle. I just happen to see DODGE written on an axle in a pile of axles as I was walking by on my hunt for a ramcharger. So they are out there. Where are you located? (stick around for awhile. Fill out your truck and location info so we can help you better)

Yea, you definity want it machined back to round. Many moons ago, I tried using some shim metal, it only lasted a few days, and destroyed a good bearing. Depending on the amount needed, it might work for a machine shop to knurl the hub, that would save welding. If you can find a shop that still does spray welding, it would likely be cheaper.

Thank you Mopar572. I called and the gentleman is not sure if it is 4x4 and he won't pull "the old stuff" and "can't find anyone who wants to work". :) But I will call him back later to see if it is 4x4.

I am interested. I'm in Austin, so about 3-4 hours away. I am working up a temporary fix and if that works I could do that.

let me know... it came off a running/driving truck. I purchased new bearings and when I went to replace them, found that the knuckles were worn due to outer bearings being spun. Luckily a member here sold and shipped me a set of knuckles, but then another member who's a local friend convinced me to purchase axles out of a 93 W350 and do an axle swap.

I have a lift and everything needed to load them up in a truck. If you're wondering about price, there's zero change you'd go home without an axle.

I was doing some research last night and found that Loctite R609 can be used for this application. I don't know if anyone has tried this but I am going to give it a go this weekend. Still plan to replace this properly but this could keep me on the road until I can replace the hub or axle. I will post the results.

if that's the loctite to hold bearing races in place, I've come across that a few times too but have no experience with it. If you've already staked it or seen evidence that someone else tried staking it and it didn't work; I wouldn't be that optimistic in it being able to fill the loose clearance and prevent the race from spinning.

For what it is worth I pulled the hub again. Did some sizing with a punch and used the Loctite 609 on it. It is holding up so far with a little over 30 miles of highway driving. Still planning on replacing the hub with a new one from gearfather.
