Fuel injection in old 79 RC

Has any one put fuel injection from a 89-93 dodge in an older 79 ? Will it bolt on? I know i will have too change the fuel pump? Is there a good or bad year to get it off of?

Thanks Todd

it has been done, it can be done, there are lots of issues and then again some are easy to overcome. if you use the 88-89 thru 91 engines it is easier as you bolt the intake on distributor, harness and computer wiring along with fuel pump and your basically in business but then you have the tbi setup that some love and some hate,

to do the magnum is a bit more involved, the blocks are cast with a crank sensor in the back of the engine which the la engines dont have. the intake bolts are perpendicutar instead of angled which requires the heads be mounted as magnum parts. (they can be used with amc v8 lifters) but some dont like to use them as bore spacing is off a bit. then you need a high pressure fuel pump and of course the computer and wiring.

if i wanted the magnum multiport i would say swap in the entiree engine to make it easier. but who am i to say what is easy ;D
The tbi seem to be what i was thinking i was not sure what years it came in . Will i need to get the tbi off of a 360 are there 4 barrels tbi? Will it run as good as my 700cfm carb? the swap sounds straight forward. What are the down sides of the tbi?

Thanks Todd
they only offered 2bbl tbis from the factory. drawbacks are the mixture is still mixed before the valve, a bit tougher to diagnose problems with electronically, not as effiecent at sequential, stupid idle air motors are slow, no upgrades on computers like hipo chips.

but they are great for idling in 45degree grades and get better mileage and overall power than carbs, start right up and run perfect cold hot ect.

running as good as your 700 carb. i would say yes although the tbi is actually closer to 650cfm, you may loose a bit on the top end but maybe not depending if your jetting is right on.

personaly i wouldnt go with a TBI.... a nice 770 holley is just as nice, sometimes more electronics can equal more problems
People will battle back and forth about carbs vs. fuel injection.
Here is my lowdown:

Carburated
  • Pro
  • More room for power upgrades
  • Easier to tune/troubleshoot (debatable)
  • no computers (debatable)
  • Less expensive
  • Con
  • Less efficient
  • higher emissions
  • More maintenance intensive

Fuel Injection
  • Pro
  • Better gas mileage
  • Better power out of the box
  • Less maintenance, no adjusting idle screws etc.
  • Better off camber driveability
  • Easier cold starting
  • Error codes help troubleshooting
  • Lower emissions

  • Con
  • Harder to upgrade engine, computer needs re-calibration ($$$)
  • More expensive, takes time to retrofit
  • If the computer goes, you are f*cked
  • Many, many relays and sensors

I like fuel injection, because I don't need 400 horsepower. I am happy with 250 and 350 foot pounds.
It all comes down to what you want out of your engine, and what you want it to do.

Thanks for all the info I am tired of fixing my Q-jet i have have problems with it ever since it was new from Jet performance . I will have to get a shop manual to get all the tech on the fuel injection. I will have to give it a try!!!!

Thanks Todd

Just as a side note, Jet Chip does make performance chips for certain year TBI's. I ran one on my 90 and liked quite a bit.

I know the feeling! lol

biggest thing for most of us is an Fi engine won't flood out on hills like a carb'd engine will...and yes, even those fancy high dollar carbs made for hills still flood out.....

cool, if you have any info on it please post it here, we are doing a tbi swap here and need a chip but when i called jet they said they never offered anything of hte like, we would like to get one and im sure if they offered them there are still some around somewhere, a part number would be great even a picture just showing they did it so they will at least give us the time of day would be cool.
