Found this video about restoring a 1980 D300 tow truck, its an interesting watch!
Restoration Of A Wrecker

And this guy is for sale at a nearby ex-Chrysler dealer. It was their own tow truck. Its a solid, great looking 88 Ram 350. It has a 360 and a 5 sp manual.

There's tow truck nuts?  ;D
An 88 with an in cab fuel tank?  ???

Not the first time I've seen that. On most dodge wreckers, the fuel tank wants to occupy some of the same space that the winch and controls do, so they continued to use the In-cab tank on some of the Cab & Chassis trucks.
I don't think that's necessary.  The dealer I worked for had an '84 W350 wrecker that was damn near identical, with the same Retriever wrecker body and it used a Ramcharger fuel tank at the rear.  On the red one above the bumper is a replacement and the dollies are missing.

Must vary on the bed manufacturer/style. Because on my W300 there is no space for a RC Fuel Tank, it's occupied by the bed controls (which stick down through the bed, cross over to the passenger side to an identical control box and then make their way to the front of the bed)

If it was all hydraulic, there'd be more space for a fuel tank. But it's all mechanical. Whenever most of the beds changed over to Hydraulic controls was around the time they stopped doing the In-Cab tank on Cab & Chassis trucks.
Like I said, the truck we used is an '84, 4 years earlier than the one above and used a tank under the bed.  It used the exact same Retriever wrecker body with mechanical controls.  If I can get a hold of the family that owned the dealership to get some pics of it, I will since they kept the two wreckers and the rollback when they sold the dealership.
Just txt'd the owner, the '84 wrecker in question does have a tank under the body, but not a Ramcharger tank like I assumed.  It's a 22 gallon tank but is mounted behind the axle, under the body.
Grab me some pics of that setup when you get a chance, because I'd love to add a second tank to my W300 and finish the Hydraulic Wheel Lift retrofit so it can actually be used to tow vehicles again (since everything is plastic these days, the old sling is pretty much pointless)
That is the problem with this setup, is a wheel lift.  With the tank at the end of the frame, it would have to be moved to install a wheel lift, which is why our little wrecker never got one and we just used the rollback 90% of the time.  The little BR series diesel wrecker had a wheel lift but it was broke down more often than not.  I'll see if I can get pics of the little wrecker if it's somewhere I can get to it and maybe the big dual line wrecker if it's there also.  ;D
Cool resto.........  ;)

I caught the bug several years ago when I spotted Dodge Retriever in the used car lot at my fav u-pull-it. Haven't scratched that itch yet but suspect I will.

A couple months ago while on a quest for a 79/80 rad support I found a really clean one in a yard a few miles from the house. They won't sell it unless I buy the entire truck which is 79 D300 Retriever with 360 TQ and I may be forced to scoop it up this week. A sling only solution works for my fleet, kinda like my old school end lift lift jack, but not crazy about it.

A couple weeks ago I spotted a kinda sweet looking 76 D300 with a 17' Jerr-Dan and a 400 also a few miles from the house. More practical but had hydro leaks and that got me thinking about who needs that headache and see also the wear pads. Also not crazy about the idea of converting it to an automatic with an engine driven PTO.

A couple days ago I spotted the one I want but [thankfully] a few hundred miles away. 79 D300 dove tail ramp truck drive train unknown. Hey, I've got a truck 440 and 2wd 727 in my stash so installed drive train irrelevant. The functionality to haul anything, no hydro hassles and doubles as a flat bed.

1967 D500 weldbuilt and a '61 chrysler 300G at home in '75 ...... WITH dollies LOL

and years later with a freshly painted '72 GMC comming home .

there is also a '68 D300 with a widow maker on it that gave up it's Ortiz wrecker for a new '78 GMC chassis , the rest were not dodges  so ....

older dovetail and older roll/slide/tilt beds beware the chassis was often cut / lengthened because at that time a bare cab chassis 1 ton was not available from the factory with a long enough wheel base . also older steel 1 ton rollback types were at their weight limmit with a VW on it . 1 tons are not used anymore , low pro types and doubble cabs 1 1/2 -2 tons :
a kit was around to convert a sling to a wheel lift , using the cable to pick up a slide or "arm" attached to the rear plate .......    a Holmes 480 on a dodge ton would be .....

If anyone has the itch, I have a holmes sling boom in my back yard  ;D ;D ;D. Came in my '73 when I bought it; the PO had the truck for over 30 years, and built the setup himself and used it extensively.

There's a 75-76 wrecker truck about 30 miles from me; it is a wheel lift, and looked pretty good last time I drove past.

I'm diggin that gray one with the black stripe.
gray w/ stripe is a NoMar wrecker , one behind it may be a weldbuilt or a holmes single
The one behind it is a chevy so I can't tell ya anything about it.

The grey one is actually white w/ mildew and part of the NoMar lettering is still on it.

I know work and yer durango are taking up 150% of your life but if ya dig enough to buy it for like $800, I can store it for a few months.

Yard owner said they were using it to move stuff around the yard until one of the clock punchers broke the driveshaft. There is a twisted piece of it laying in the bed. The interior is in great shape. Cab floors are soft under the carpet but rockers / doors / fenders / cab corners are all nice rust wise. Didn't get my head underneath it because of the mud where it's sitting.

I almost bought it to part it out but I know myself better than that - I'd fix it and drive it. I even know where there's a tow mirror in a different yard.

My wife would kick me out of the house if i bought that. I already have too many "things" in the yard that I don't have time for. :p

We are looking to buy 30 acres up north so money will be funneled into an account for that before I buy anymore trucks. BUT I was told if I buy, fix, and flip them I can buy what I want as long as it's makes money. ;)
