another idea is use galvanize steel or alluminum, this will allow you to have rust protection and you can weld it in with ease i did this and it is sturdy effective and no rust. if you are cutting your own steel and making it work that way i would fold the edges of the plates at least 3 times this will cause it to be ridgid and take the flex out of it. and give you more to weld with.

If you're floor is badly rusted and you are new at fabricating metal , you might consider buying some aftermarket patch panels. Not sure where you can get them over there, but any of the local body shops should be able to tell you who supplies them. If you want to get an idea of what is available, go to http://www.crosscanadaparts.com/cgi-bin/crosscanada/product_list.html?img_num=326 It's a Canadian site , so the prices are in Cdn dollars. If you are not into welding, you could always use fiberglass to patch smaller holes. I've used it before with epoxy instead of resin. You can mix the epoxy to cure a little slower which will give to time to make sure the cloth is in the shape that you want. Just don't use the fiberglass right above a cat if you have one.
