Right now I have a 84 dodge slant 6, and am wanting some more power, I can get my hands on some 318's and 360's, but it is the transmision that I am having problems with. My truck is a 3spd overdrive, I think it is a A-833 , and am wondering if I can just swap a smallblock in, But I dont know if it will work, the bellhousing is probally different, but not two sure, I anyone can help that would be great. If not, what would be the best route, I just turned 16, and am on a minimal budjet.
thanks ;D

I was under the impression you could swap on the LA bellhousing from a V8 A833 to an A833OD....is this not true ED3?

while i believe this is true, it would probably be cheaper and easier trying to get either an np435 and matching bellhousing or getting a 727 to go behind it than trying to find a v8 a833 bellhousing

How far off is the bellhousing from the np435, from the a833, does anyone know if it is possible to just drill and tap new holes in the np435 trans, belhousing , or any way to make it work

wont work, the 435 bell is alot different than the 833 bell. found this out when i swapped a 435 into an 82 1/2 ton in place of a 833.

bolt holes are different, openeing in bell for tranny is alot different and i think depth is different on them as well

ok you can just swap to a LA bellhousing as long as the bellhousing was on an aluminum OD tranny.

i can imagine you will want more performance. if i was you i would look around for an older car with a 360 4spd and buy the assembly. it ll cost a bit more now, but you WILL LOVE it. for now just save up.

the small bells for the 833 are mostly the same, only difference is there are 4 different bearing retainer sizes, they differ depending on year, the bells are available easily if you choose to use them. measure the bearing retainer on yoru trans, most are a bit under 5 inches. 4.800 is the common one. if it is that size then look for the bell or you can change the bearing retainer on the frotn of the trans to accomodate this. easy stuff, some of the older bells had dual patterns to fit the 3 speed and granny tranny, and i had one that the a 833 bolted up to.

btw the 833 and 833 alum 0d is the same tranny basically, the 3-4 shift rod is upside down and there is a mainshaft and 3-4 gear change, so outside it will all work identical. goo dluck

I have found some links to ebay that have some bellhousing for and small block manual trans, If any body knows if they will work for an a-833/small block, that would help alot, this talk about measuring the berring retainer is kind of confusing, I might as well find an np-435, and hope for the best.

np435 is not a performance type. good if you are hauling a load but not good if you wanna go fast on the street.

id prefer to find an older 833.
yah I would like to do that, but I just spent 400 dolars on a new clutch. What I would like to do is find that older 833 from an old mopar, and swap the bellhousing, if it would work. that is what I am wanting to find out ???
thanks again for the replys ;D
