I finally cracked open one of my spare 203 shifters to see if it could be refurbished. Unfortunately, I can't see any way to get the slop out of it. I took some pics of anyone is curious or maybe has an idea on how to freshen it up. All I can suggest from what I saw is to lubricate your shifter. It is just metal sliding on metal, and will wear very quickly if neglected.
I did use a throttle return spring on the loc lever so it is less prone to hop out of loc. If you get the tension just right, it will help hold it in loc, without pulling it out of open.

Did ya not see any way to make creative use of fuel line or heater/garden hose "bushings" to kinda hold things snug... If you've got the "singing shift shaft" phenom... some foam pipe insulation will help quieten it...

William, email me some pictures...I'm a sloppy kinda person! Let me know where you think the wear is most evident or if it's just side play that's the problem.
