This might be a stupid question, but I don't know much about the differences in diesel engines. There is an add in the local buy&sell for a 5.9 Cummins out of a late 80's early 90's school bus. How simillar/disimillar are these engines to the ones that were available in the dodge trucks of the same time frame.

if it's got a turbo it should be 6bt, the cummins don't have a bell bolt pattern built onto the block, they use an adapter bolted to the engine to bolt the tranny bell to. You can get an adapter to fit a wide variety of applications.

if im not mistaken, the 5.9 used in commercial applications is very different from the ones used in pickup trucks.

If it is a 5.9 then it's the same basic engine.
