Dash Swap, will it work?

Hi guys,

Since I have to replace the w-shield in the '81, I decided to go ahead and put that A/C dash in it. BUT, it started to cloud up (later found out Tornado threat!) where I was and all I wanted to do was get the dash out, which I succeded in doing.

Anyway, going to replace the W-shield pretty quick and I'm wanting to know if the heater box will slide in and out with the dash in place. I'm unable to get the heater box right now, so thats out.

Also, how should I go about switching tags? All I'm doing is replacing the dash, so its not like a VIN Swap. Truck still has the door sticker, and original engine and transmission.

I'de just drill out the old rivits and swap out the VIN. I don't see why it would be illegal. You are just swapping dashes like you said.
Just FYI: Technically speaking, tampering with a VIN tag is a federal offence, and is only supposed to be done by a certified person. Here in CA, the Highway Patrol has a division for just that purpose.

Off the record, I don't see a problem, but it might not hurt to make a phone call to double-check. Out here, there's officers who drive around making house calls to do this kind of thing.{cool}
Only in Cali would they do that go figure ::) . I owuld call the DMV and see what is the deal though Jamie . I wouldthink it would be alright seeing how you are replacing the right vin plate not altering one form another rig .

The heater box can be removed with the dash in place. It's a b**** but it can be done.
