IS it that your leaving fuel in the carb and its gushing everything up in there? That might be your problem.

Sounds like it is 'dumping' fuel. Float level may be set incorrectly, but more likely a stuck needle & seat.

If it has been doing this for a while, probably time for a rebuild. (I would guess it is a Carter BBD 2bbl...if it is, they are easy to rebuild, even if you have never done it before)

Rebuild instructions come with the rebuild kits. Follow them to a "T"..especially the float, metering rod, and accelerator pump adjustments.

318 2 bbl Carter is almost certainly a BBD. Just be sure to compare the pieces in the rebuild kit to yours before you open it. BBD's have several variants with slightly differing internals.

The main thing you will need is bench space, lay everything out neatly, in the order you took it apart. Clean the re-used pieces, make sure to spray carb cleaner through every little passage you can find. There really is not much to a BBD internally.

2280's and 6280's are Holley.
I beleive the 6280 is basically a 2280 with a bunch of junk added to it for the beloved lean burn system.

and glad to hear it went well.
