I can't find a spec for axle shaft play anywhere (linear play) for a 9 1/4 corp axle. I know you can get different thickness side gear thrust washers, but nowhere can I find a spec for the in & out play at the wheel flange of the axle. And the thickness washers I can get don't seem to work for what I think I need.

Also, can you tell me the thickness difference in the pre 84 c-clips and the post 84 c-clips.

And can they be swapped ???

Right now, I have a .042" thrust washer in place, and the axle play (in & out) is .052". I want to get it to .025" - .030", which would require a .058" thrust washer, leaving about .004" between the center pin and the axle end at full insertion. They don't make one, and I can't add 2 - .031" washers, cuz that is too much I know .063" of thrust washer will not let me get the center pin back in..

I was wondering if the thicker c-clip might limit axle shaft movement better than the old thin ones I have, if they will even fit.

The locker I have specifies .020" - .025" play on the axle,a nd since their parts basically lock the c-clip inplace, it has to be taken up at the thrust washer.

Do you understand what I am saying ??? or asking ?? or am I confusing you completely ??

The parts catalogue lists a different axle for use with the different clips. Presumably then, the clips are not interchangable. Chrysler measures the "axle play" at the side gear by pushing it towards the clip. Is it possible that your side gears are wore out? Maybe even the case could be wore. I think chrysler wants .005" or less with an open rear.

that # is a LOT less than everyone else has been saying. I have yet to see any vehicle with that little side play....even race cars with a spool have more than that.

Iknow the c-clips are different part numnbers, but the difference is how thick they are.

Here's what I have found or not.
1. All the books I have read say that the 9.25 was designed not to have to worry about axle end play. ???
2. The parts books I have do not list the thickness of the C-clips. ???
3. As for the thrust washers, I don't see any other thickness listed except for the shim kit you may already have. .031-.048 ???

If it were me I would contact the locker manufacturer's Tech Support or maybe Randy's Ring and Pinion for some advice?

I would worry more about affecting the spider gear backlash when you start shiming the axle gears than how much endplay the axle shaft has. c clip rears you pretty much have what you have. The 85 and up c clips are also a different id where it mates to the shaft. I put a set of 86 9 1/4 axles into a 77 housing one time, I had to machine the ID of the 77 clips out to the 86 shaft size.

TXS...I now have a brand new still in the bag set of c-clips for the later model 9 1/4....if ya want them, let me know. I can't use them safely, the hole on the inside is too big.

UPDATE

With new c-clips and the washers for the locker that failed, I now have .020" end play......good enough for me. Locker instructions say .020" or so......good to go I figure !!!
