I was rebuilding my quadrajet this weekend due to some issues I was having keeping my 86 ram running. When I opened it up, I found about a tablespoon of charcoal from the canisters in the float bowl and a few pieces in with the accel. pump. I have dual canisters on this truck. What would cause this charcoal to end up here? I thought the vapors were flowing to the canister and not flowing this way. Has anyone ever heard of this before? What problems might this cause?

The vapors go from the cannisters to the carb to burn off. mine did the same thing and I was finding that gas was being sucked up from the tank via the vent line. After replacing both cans, it was still causing some serious suction, so instead of it happening again, I disconnected the vent line from the can and plugged it loosely. And plugged the opening on the can. Hasn't happened since and I still have passed emissions.

Don't know why this happens. The guy I got my truck from said the same thing happened... mines a single canister with the Carter 2bl

You can always install a fuel filter in the line running to the carb. This leaves the system functional, but prevents charcoal from making it to the carb.

The charcoal canisters should have a one way valve that only allows gas fumes to re-enter the vacuum line of the carb. If they are working improperly, they will allow charcoal to be sucked in through the carb. Had to clean my carb. twice before I figured it was the canister allowing charcoal to enter. Once I changed my canister, it worked fine.

EZ Rider has the answer. If you get raw gas in the cannister, it will cause the charcoal to breakdown. Mine did the same thing except mine won't run at all. I simply disconnected the hose to the carb after tearing the carb apart and cleaning it. My neighbor who owns an auto repair shop and is a dodge fan from way back, put a fuel filter in as suggested by one of the above posts.

Thanks everyone for the help. I rebuilt the carb last night and have a few minor adjustments to make before installing. Will probably get it running this weekend and I will put a filter inline.
