best way to figure gear ratoi??

what would the best way short of removing the Diff cover to fine the gear ratio on my rear end.I jacked up the truck.And I turned the wheel and counted the drive shaft.And x2 that And come out with 3.25.Does that sound right?I dont know what some of the Ratios where for 1985 1/2 ton truck.

well, i have an 85 3/4 ton and i have factory 3.54 gears. check if there is a tag on one of your cover bolts, it should say your ratio on it, you might have to scrape the rust and stuff off of it though.

3.21 is a very common gear ratio...so, yes that sounds about right :)
i have 3.23
mine has the towing rear end 3.50, I read it on one of the stickers in the engine compartment and also on the original window sticker.

I thought 3.23 was common for Dodge.
Yeah, 3.23 and 3.55 are the most common 1/2 ratios. There can be small differences in the gear ratios, but their still the same. Like 4.10 and 4.11 is effectively the same. That's why everyone's comming up with different numbers
Good, I thought I was losing my mind...
On my 84 front was 3.21, rear 3.23 (or maybe reversed)

On my 90 One was 3.54 the other 3.55.
