I haven't done the swap, but if all goes as planned, I will be doing it around June. (440 for 318)

There's some good info in this FAQ

Also, there have been quite a few posts about the swap (many for a 440), so try a search on "440" or "big block".

Bouchillon Performance has a lot of parts for the swap. I've also read that parts are still available from Dodge.

no the 400 won't bolt up to the 318 trans, you need a big block trans. i am working on this swap right now into an 85 ram so if you have any questions just IM me or post on the site.

Im swapping a 440 for my 318 in my 77 W200 right now. You will need a big block tranmission. You can swap out the tail housing on the small block tans and the big block trans. so you can get a 2wd big block trans and just swap the tail houseing.
You will need a rear sump oil pan and new dip stick. Truck motor mounts unless you pulled the engien froma truck. Cooper30 posted a good site to get that stuff.

Check Advance Adapters for an adapter for a big block engine to a small block tranny. I have heard of this being done. I am pretty sure it was Advance. I know you can't go from a big block to a small block and use the same tranny. I am going in that direction, luckily I have the tranny that came with the engine. Any info about swapping a 440 will be valid for a 400.

I have a 400 and I think it is best used as a boat anchor. I'll take a well built 318 any day.

I would prefer a 440 as well, but I miss my old 400, and would love to have another one day. Biggest thing keeping me from pursuing that is having to feed it at current fuel prices.

Will the yolk from the 904 trans (on 2x4) work with the big block 727  ? Do you have any fittment problems with stuffing a BB in an RC (84) like power brake canister?

You don't need the smaller OD brake booster with a 400, just the 413/426/440. They are a RB (raised block) engine. The 361/383/400 are a low deck engines.

Please, an answer guys... will the driveshaft have to be changed or a different yoke or anything?
