Looking for advice, should I attempt a rebuild or just replace? I've never torn a carb apart before and my experience with them has been limited to adjusting the idle mix and electric choke. My rig has been running rough and has been giving me some occasional backfiring problems when cold. Last night it was real bad so I climbed up and found pools of gas in the corners by the secondaries and fuel dripping from the side of the shaft end.

I'm not certain if its a Edelbrock or an AFB, no labeling on the front. I need to pull it tonight and find the numbers.

Any big shakes doing my own rebuild besides blowing the money and time and having to go buy something new? Should I have it dipped or glass beaded, is it necessary or just a can of carb cleaner and a brush?

Appreciate any advice.

from the sounds of it your shaft bushings are worn, this is a bit beyond what you can do with a home rebuild kit.

however, the carter afb/ edelbrock performer is not a hard carb to rebuild, can do it in a couple of hours

what vehicle and engine is this on?

a rebuild kit for that carb is going to set you back about $45 from summit. also edelbrock has a downloadable version of their tech manual for this carb. so their is plenty of info out there for it and if all else fails you can ask on here i have done a few of these carbs.

also a remanned eddy is going to set you back just under $200 and a new one will be just over $200.

if ya decide you would rather go with a different carb let me know, i got a few tquads here if you are interested

I dont mean to hi-jack your post here but I have the same prolbem leaking out the shaft but my carb is a carter 2brl. Also when I shut the truck off gass keeps dirping in to the carb its almost a stream. what would cause the gas to keep dripping after the truck is off? The only thing I can think of is I filled the tank up yesterday and that is the first time I have done that sence I got this truck and I think that the pressure is pushing the gas out. Is it time for a new carb?

Hijack away :) actually mine was still leaking after it was shut off too. Eric, I appreciate the advice. The carb is on a 81 4x, 318. Pulled it today, its a 9636 AFB. When I turned it over quite a bit of old nasty fuel dumped from somewhere. The clean fuel came out of the bowls, but real yellowish stuff dumped from inside somewhere, probably a 1/2 cup or a little more. Even had the varnish smell.

So those shaft bushings actually go through a place inside that holds fuel to leak out??

Thanks for the guidance.

fuel leaking from the shafts does not indicate worn shafts. It indicates that fuel is leaking inside your carb usually due to the fuel level being too high. Bad floats or a bad needle valve can cause this. Try a complete rebuild and you should be good. AFB's are easy to rebuild.

while you are right, it does indicate an internal leak in the carb somewhere he still shouldnt have fuel leaking around shafts. on the good side of this though, if he rebuilds carb and gets all new gaskets it will probably stop leaking fuel and therefore would not be able to get to shafts anymore.

then about all it might cause depending on severity wpould be a little whistling sound, not likely for this to happen unless carb is totally worn out though.

skysho, part number you will want is edelbrock part number 1477, i am not sure but i also think offroad needles and seat should fit this carb as well, if so and oyu are interested, that part number is edelbrock number 1465

best price i have found on them so far has been summit

Thanks for all this super advice! Dropped into my local speed shop, even though he had a killer deal on a new Edelbrock...he looked at my carb and said I'd be nuts not to rebuild it. So he kicked out a kit and I'm making a date to sit down with my carb. Plus I grabbed a new adapter from spread to square since whoever put the carb on felt two plain gaskets would basically do the same thing. I suspect the airflow will be a bit smoother.

Thanks again all.

sky,

sounds like ya got a decent guy there at the speed shop, one who isnt in it just to make a sale. as far as the eddy and the afb goes, they are almost 100% identical, did ya get the offroad needles and seats? will make a huge diff when offroading.

any ?'s ya have when rebuilding let us know.

also, you are right, the adapter will make it work so much better than the 2 gaskets

I sure appreciate the tips and support! I'm gonna give that carb an extreme makeover in the morning. So I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.

Of course its raining in Oregon and the truck sits outside and I've been reading the posts on the darn firewall water trickle. Unfortunately the rigs has that same problem, I think the carb sounds more fun than ripping my fenders off.

Thanks again.

And the same answer is most likely true for Liquid's two barrel. Sounds to me as if the float/needle valve is not closing properly. Get a rebuild kit and have at it. Filling the tank completely, just maybe, have loosened some crud that got through the fuel filter... I'd replace the filter before putting the rebuilt carb back on.
