I recently changed the filter and fluid in my '89 RC's transmission. To my horror, I just discovered (almost 1000 miles later) that I didn't use Dexron III, but rather, I seem to have inadvertently put in "ATF+III". I believe the reason this happened is because the label on the this AFT reads "For Chrysler Transmissions", and this threw me off. My question...should I immediately drain the tranny and put in Dexron III? Will harm come to the beastie if I leave the AFT+III in there? There seems to have been no degredation in performance, and the trany functions normally with the +III in there.

Thanks!

I don't think the ATF + 3 will hurt anything in a 727, i know the trans shops around here use dexron 3 in everything. They add Lube Gard to dexron 3 to give it the needed additive package.

If you read closely.. it should say use Mopar type 7176 on the dipstick.. ATF+III is 7176 ..

so no worries
Thanks for the replies. Yessir, the dipstick says to use "ATF PLUS" 7176, or DEXRON II. I read through the allpar.com link, and it was a little confusing, till I discovered they were talking about 4 speed automatics. Mine is a 3 speed.

So, another question...I'm assuming that Dexron III is a downward-compatible replacement for Dexron I and II (since I can't find anything but Dexron III at my parts store). So, is ATF+III also a compatible replacement for the entire Dexron series? This is confusing. I guess the golden rule is to use what's stamped onto the dipstick.

I'm curious to know now which AFT fluid I should be using in my 69 Charger's A-904 tranny. I have been using Dexron III.
