Hi guys.

As most of you know, my father-in-law passed away yesterday.  We need his discharge papers from the Marine Corps for the death certificate, funeral, etc.  Dad never registered with the VA, so that's not an option.  Mom spent all night going through the attic, but is not having any luck finding them and is getting frantic.

She did find his payroll slips, so we do have his military number.  The funeral director said he could use that, but it would take six months to get results.  Yep...lotta help there.

If any of you guys know what we should do next or who to contact, I would truly, truly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Missy

Check in with the county veterans rep, thats his job, to help you in situations like this.

Your Father in Law, may have registered his 214 with the county court house, when he got home, I think its the same office that keeps the birth certificates. but the county rep, can lead you in the right direction.

Also, when you get his 214, and the death cert, you can take them to the post office, and get an American flag.

You might try this site, you will have to register under his credentials,it may be a bitch. but if you can get registered, you can get his records, including the DD214, within an hour.

Here is info on the flags.

My understanding, you can get either a free headstone.

or a medallion, to affix to a head stone that the family bought.

also get a certificate, for the family history.

Looks like your county may have a a state mandated program to give assistance, hard to tell from the state website though.
