Im looking into a 90ish ramcharger 318 auto 2wd. guy just wants to get rid of it for a couple hundred and the body and interior is in pretty good shape. I really like the truck but its a 2WD. I dont know much about these trucks, ask me about 60's mopar cars and i can talk your ear off! Just interested in seeing if it is even really a task that is readily doable, how much a possible cost would be, and what parts would be needed aside from the obvious(transfer, driveshaft, front diff). Would a whole different tranny be needed or could i just find a 4wd extension housing? Thousands of questions, no answers. ANY help would be appreciated!

the best answer, buy a 4wd. yes, makin a 2x to a 4x can be done, but its a lot of work. u would need all the brackets and mounts, a new crossmember, new steering, a new tranny tailshaft, tcase, new driveshafts new axle, cut a hole in the floor for the shifter, and many other small things that wont pop up until u get involved in the project. like i said, just buy a 4x4, u will be better off.

Hate to give you the answer you don't want to hear, but converting a 2wd into a 4wd is far more involved work than simply hanging a transfer case and installing a front axle. In most cases (unless you have a complete donor truck to take parts from) it will cost you more money to convert than to buy a 4wd to begin with.

Then again, being that you know cars, that 2wd RC would make a great street rod ;D

The fella`s are right, it is a lot of work, and you will need a GOOD, RUNING 4x4 to start with. I just did one myself, and fortunatley, I had a great running 4x4, rebuilt transmission and axles to start with. still it took almost 3 months work and had to drill out rivets from both trucks, and had to replace one rear axle, but the whole project still cost me about $1700 anyway. It was worth it to me, `cause a good running 4x4 is worth $3 grand here, and now the blue book of mine is at about $3600.

Welcome to the site!

damn chris, i got my truck in EXCELLENT condition for only 1800, and it was already 4x4. i got my RC for 850 and it was in good condition. u musta wanted that 2wd to be 4wd somethin fierce to spend that much on it.

Got my 1st Rc for $1900, ran great, minor electrical trouble. drove it for 3 years then totalled it, (frame bent). Knew everything else was good so i bought a 2wd for 300 and went to work. The $1700 included the motor rebuild, new Rancho shocks and rebuilding the rear axle and brakes all around. Much cheaper than buying a newer truck that you DON`T know the history on.

i know the history on the truck, all the way since it was new. the RC, well thats a different story.

Is the truck 4x4? if so, wouldn`t you feel better using it as a donor? Point is i may have paid out $1700 to rebuild it, but I have a rebuilt trans/motor/axles/brakes. and since it went into the same type vehicle, i knew also what to expect from it. WAY better than buying an exploder for $4000.
