I bought a new ignition switch (tilt steering column). There is a rod that goes into the switch. On the old one the rod kind of snaps in, but on the new switch the hole for the rod is much to big and so it pops out.

Wondering if anyone else has run into this? Maybe I have the wrong switch? I bought a Standard US91

I did remove the pin before putting the rod in. But, still the hole that the rod goes into is much bigger than the size of the rod. I see in some previous posts that some people have a hook on the end of the rod, mine does not. Is it possible there were two different types?

This I can't answer. The switch is spring loaded. Maybe they plan on the spring tension to hold the rod in place. I can't answer as to the different types.
