I just put a '85 727 in my '88 RC 4x4.
The thing won't shift out of first gear until I hit about 45mph. It also doesn't seem like it idles very fast when it's in reverse.
Is there an adjustment to change the shift points? I did have the swivel & lock bolt (on the throttle rod) off for cleaning, is that how this is adjusted?
The trans was fine when pulled, currently has 9 qts of ATF in it.

Now on my 4wd shift rod... I can't get the shift rod/grommet to press into the shift lever on the side of the transfer case. I tried soaking them in Break-Away & pressing the rod/grommet into the lever but it won't go in all the way. I was using vice-grips but it still wouldn't go on....is there some kind of trick to getting the damn thing on there? I always have problems w/those stupid things....

It sounds like you need to adjust the kickdown linkage. This procedure is detailed in the FSM, Haynes, and Chilton books. Sounds like you need to loosen the swivel and slide the rod farther into it and re-tighten.

In order for your transmission to upshift Governor Pressure has to overcome Throttle Pressure. Throttle Pressure is controled up your kickdown linkage. If it is out of adjustment it will definitley mess up your shift points!

Yea adjust the linkage, as for the shift linkage for the Tcase, I used the longest handled pliers I could find to squeez it back on.

I adjusted the linkage a little, now it shifts at 40 if I hammer on it. But if I drive like a sane person, it shifts @ about 25. A couple friends stopped over & managed to get the shifter linkage back onto the 241 for me.

25 for the 1-2 shift is still a little high, it should be right around 17 mph and the 2-3 shift should be at about 25 mph under light acceleration.

Thanks for the info! As soon as it gets a bit dryer I'll play trial & error with it until I get it right
