727 tranny question

1541 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Taz_man440
O.k. guys... The 85 R/C i just got... the tranny won't pull in reverse. It will pull in drive.. the fluid smells burnt & the kickdown wasn't connected... My question is... If the reverse band is out.. can it be replaced without pulling the tranny apart? i have never been in one past the valvebody... Or what are the chances that a fluid change, filter replacement, & band adjustment will cure this?? ;D

Thanks
Will ;D

It sounds like the rear band is toast from not running the kick down linkage.

Tranny must be tore down to replace the rear band. It's not too hard.

Chances of a fluid cange and adjustment fixing it... probably very small.

Pull the pan and check the rear band, it'll probably be very loose.

In my bro's 727, the rear band wore out and the previous owner tried to readjust the rear band. Apparently there wasn't enough adjustment to tighten the band, so they replaced the adjuster bolt with a longer one. It didn't work, here's what happened to the rear drum:

drop the pan ..leave a few bolts in the corner so the fluid will drain easily into your container ....inspect bottom of pan ..you might find a large piece of metal ..thats the busted reverse band ..if you find sluge thats clutch material .
you will need to remove the trannie for anything more than a inspection..it all loads through the front....
...it is possible to just replace the band with out a rebuild .. and still get some miles out of it ...if theres no sluge in the pan.. ....mine has lasted 40 thousand after the band replacement ,but it was clean inside the pan....
sources for the band is transmission shops i just got one for ten dollars there.. and they have all your answers too....
