It's an 88 RC. It's raining here today and on my way to lunch I decided to put it in 4 HI to keep it loose. As I neared home I knew that I am not supposed to make shape turns so I put in 2 HI. Took a bit for it to go from 4 to 2 and it made a slight bump when it changed and the "engaged" light went off. So on the way back to the store I put in 4 HI and again when I got close to where I had to make a sharp turn I went bk to 2 HI. This time it did not shift to 2 HI even tho the lever is hard against the gate. So I had to park it still in 4 HI. Any help as to why it won't go back to 2 HI?

my 94 bumps everytime i take it out of 4wd and never had a problem. I've considered it normal. I wouldn't run 4wd in the rain. I don't think its really slick enough unless you have bald tires.

I had a problem of shifting from 4 hi to 4 lo. I was in gear and moving forward slowly and finally I heard and felt a major clunk and never did get to 4 lo. I later learned that to go from 4 hi to 4 lo you have to be in park or neutral and not moving. I wonder if I did any damage?

even though you shifted, are you sure your hubs are disengaging? an 88, i am guessing this is a CAD setup, is your vac line still connected or working?

may be try backing up a bit and see if it shifts out then, if not then check the linkage like everyone else suggested

The bumping on my truck is the CAD disengaging. It happens everytime I shift out of 4wd on the go. Sometimes it will do it when i come to a stop and disengage and take off again it will take a little bit for the CAD to fully disengage.

First thing is, you really shouldn't lock the transfer case into 4wd on hard surfaces. Even though it's raining, the tires may not be slipping enough to releive any binding thats going on. (Remember modern tires live for wet pavement)

Just keeping in a straight line helps only alittle, but unless you measured the tires and they are exactly the same, you'll still experiance drivetrain bind.

I'm guessing you've bound up the drivetrain. You'll need to back up about 15ft, perhaps spinning a tire. Or get in some grass and floor it for a few feet.

You are better off leaving the truck in 2wd even when it rains. The additional traction that 4wd provides will not help you much in a 4wd system dependent on tire slip to prevent drivetrain bind-up. If you really want 4wd for inclimate weather, you should consider an All wheel drive or a full time 4wd which both have differentials in the transfercase to allow for axle differentation.

as mentioned, check to see if it is still in 4wd, the t-case may be in 2hi but the cad is still locked. Could be a variety of issues causing it not to work right. Think they're covered in the FAQ board. And the backing up as mentioned may take care of it too.
