can the 440 go right in? it is originally out of a 69 coronet..then in the 1978 rc. got all mounts etc etc..but will the trans line up (just rebuilt) or should i put the trans that was set up with the 440 in ? help info needed..this 440 has been waiting since last july to thump some heads..

I haven't done the swap, but I am going to. I just picked up my 440 last week. It's sitting in my barn waiting to be rebuilt.

From what I have read, the small block tranny won't work with a big block. The cases are different.

been there, doing it. no the small block trans won't work, gotta use the one with the 440, if the eng was in a rc already the oil pan and everything should be correct, and every thing will line right up and fall right into place. easy swap if you have a donor truck like you do.

should just slide back together, i have never used a special tool to install an automatic tranny.

i know on manual trannies they have an alignment tool but an old broom handle works just as well for that

i agree with intenseimages, but just slide it on the trabs and put the engine in and then put the bolts in through the flexplate, it's much easier that way.

ahh tabs..thats what manual talked about, i haven't looked at that damn torque convert since it was taken out. then i came up with this bright idea that maybe trans are different. then got a little worried about this torque chinga tool. i know fords/ chevys i just slapped them together, and the chevy was a 4 spd muncie that i knew ya needed alignment tool, was scared that my rc had some more special traits...thank you all for the help

On several of these howto's the people mentioned the other booster, a smaller one. What do they typically come out of as a donor ..??
Factory big block pickups and RC's, or at least some 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups.
My 318 equipped W250 has the smaller booster, it's like 8 3/4" diameter vs. 11" for the larger one.

I'm not sure if the flex plates are the same as the small block but before u unbolt the torque converter spray some paint or mark a bolt spot so u can just it up and put it in no problem its a pain if u dont

Donk, if I were to go to Advanced Auto and order one, what would you suggest.
I'm not sure if the mounting bolt pattern changed throughout the years.
If your year was available with a big block, order it that way.
If not, ask if there's a heavy duty braking version, and ask if they have dimensions listed, go for the smaller diameter.
Some years had hydro-boost though, don't get that one.

I haven't ordered one myself though, but that's my thought on the way to go about it.
