Any 340/360 head will (should) have larger valves @ 1.88/1.60 vs. 1.78/1.50 (with exception of 68-71 340 hp or T/A heads). The 340/360 will also have larger ports. Look for 302 or 308 as the last numbers in the casting, these heads have the most potential and offer better performance than older castings.
in a mid 80's van there is still a good chance it will have 596 heads. these heads have almost the same port size and combustion chamber volume as the 302/308's only difference is they are open chamber non-swirlport as opposed to the 308/302's, they still flow fairly well though
you already have 302 heads on your 87. In stock form they don't flow well. They can be modified with porting and 360 valves to perform very well on a 318. You need a 4 bbl manifold to see any gain at all. The stock 318 2bbl only flows 280-350 cfm. Thats only good for like 4000 rpm. You could use a 360 2bbl manifold and carb and 360 heads and see a gain in power.
