Just for reference, I had a pretty loud tick in my number 5 exhaust lifter. I pulled the covers, and the rails for inspection. It looked like the cup in the top of the lifter was tilted. I stuck a lifter down in the hole and was able to move it back into place. I bought a new set of push rods at autozone for $.99 each ($16) for the set, bolted it all back together and it runs great. It even seems to runa a little stronger. This is not a guaranteed fix for all lifter noise, but it sure did work for me.
In case anyone is wondering, the retainer clip was still in place. It looks like maybe the lifter did not pump up and the cup and pushrod just got goofed up.

I hope this can help someone!!
