You guys that put the 1406 with an edelbrock performer intake on a 318, did you have to do any changes to get it to run good?  My 318 runs very smooth at idle, and higher rpm's, but it has a stumble when you get on it from idle.  I'm not exactly sure what I need to do to get it working smoothly.  It is also puffing a little black smoke, I think its running too rich

Go ahead and get the tuning kit for the carb.  You might have to change the step up springs for the metering rods.  Sounds like some tuning with the accelerater pump is needed.  Vacuum holds the metering rods down and flipping the throttle reduces vaccuum momentarily.  There is springs that are trying to push up on the metering rods but the vaccuum overpowers them.  If your vaccuum drops enough when flipping throttle the spring will push up on the metering rod and making a richer mixture.  The springs are rated in inches of vaccuum at which they can override vaccuum.  Playing with these springs can give a better transition from idle to cruise to power modes of carb.

Backfiring through carb right off Idle when accelerating is not enough accelerator pump shot.  Too much pump shot can cause a bog and black smoke.

Okay, my dad helped me mess with it when he got home from work today, and its running pretty good now.The smoke and stumble seems to be gone.  We also adjusted the timing a little.  I'm going to test driving it around tomorrow, and adjust my kickdown also.  I really like the Lokar set up I put on it!  I am also amazed how this motor starts up and sounds.  It is a completely rebuilt 318, and dang does it sound alot healthier than the one in my RC...

I had a eddy 750 on my 390 and it blew black smoke when I gassed it, and my friend adjusted the linkage on the acclerator pump and that cleared it up a bit....
