"I love it when a plan comes together"

« on: August 30, 2010, 05:43:33 AM »

There is currently a debate concerning the Glenn Beck rally. Depending on who you listen to, some report the rally drew in a crowd of "tens of thousands" while Glenn Beck himself mentioned that the crowd size could be anywhere from 300 thousand to 600 thousand. I was one of those who attended, (and I have the video to prove it  Grin ). I wanted to do my own estimation of crowd size based on what I saw. Most people brought lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. But there were places under the trees and near the reflecting pool where it was standing room only. I decided to make an estimation based on physical space. If we were to give each person who attended a space of ten square feet and determined how much space existed where the rally was held, we might have some sort of estimation of crowd size. Using Google Earth, I made some measurements of the land where the rally was held. A measurement for length in feet was taken from the Lincoln memorial to the street located next to the WW2 memorial, and the width was taken from the widest point, from Independence ave, to the south, to Constitution ave at the north. 2925' X 1776'. These are rough measurements as I suspect the measuring tool in Google Earth is not accurate, but it's good enough for a rough estimate. I also subtracted the dimensions of the reflecting pool, which I looked up on Wikipedia, which is 339 thousand square feet. Estimated square feet minus the reflecting pool; 5,194,461 sq.ft. Giving each person 10 sq.ft. of space we get a crowd size of 519,446 people. Additionally I did not include the large number of people who were located between the WW2 memorial and the Washington monument, a distance of 1347 feet. Anyone can make their own measurements using Google Earth to check me. I can tell you by simple observation, that the crowd who attended wasn't "tens of thousands". There were at least a "half million" Americans who attended.

Ed

Edit and correction; After reviewing my post I made an error. I forgot to subtract an area of space occupied by a second body of water located within the area where the rally was held. A smaller kidney shaped pool of water just north of the reflecting pool. I'll stand by my earlier estimate as I gave everyone a generous 10 sq.ft. of space and did not include the people who showed up that were between the WW2 monument and Washington monument

Gee Petey, funny about Glenn Beck, for a corp/gov't mainstream media spankermonkey, He doesn't throw insults and hope it sticks or makes statements without backing them up. When he states something like the Libs are socialists, communists, or marxists, he shows it in their own words. When he says the Constitution says something or the founders said something, he gives the exact quote. Dislike Beck all you wish, but he is revealing the truth in their own words. Now you want to debate whether the media was right about the number of people who attended??

Glenn Beck is a rabble rouser, plain and simple.  In this particular case, I feel it is rabble that is very justified in rousing and he is doing a good thing.  I don't mind him getting famous or making a profit from it since he at least makes sense which is something that the current crop of imbeciles in DC fail to do miserably.

In reality, Lanty, the true purpose of this particular event was to allow Brother Beck to lay the groundwork for the predetermined Brother Romney/Sarah Palin GOP Presidential ticket in 2012.   Yes

Ron Paul supporters know what we're up against and it will most likely take more than one Presidential campaign to take back our liberty and freedom and restore the Constitution of the United States.  The message continues to spread and the donations are continuing to roll in.  Many like-minded individuals are getting involved either by seeking office or backing those who do.  The young people who have now adopted the true American libertarian constitutionalist ideology will carry this torch for the rest of their lives.

George Washington and his Continental Army took quite a few beatings from the Redcoats before this country won her independence from Great Britain.  Like the Revolutionary War, this battle will not be won overnight.  We will never surrender and we will eventually prevail.   Grin

I'm going to go with Kendall on this one.

Why the focus on how many people may or may not have attended? 600k, 300k, 12. Who cares? Is a larger number somehow indicative of whether the person leading the rally is "more right". Because, I think some of the crowds of Das Fuhrer might have outnumbered 600k, and we all know how well that worked out for him....

well for starters, if there were to many people attending he could be fined, the permit was for 300,000 if those numbers are exceeded and confirmed then the opposition has just one more foot-hold ta hang on with. so in real numbers i think we may never know, but the official stats will show somthin near the 300,000 mark.... LMFAO Bob!!!  It's difficult to imagine there wasn't a conspiracy against the '74-'79 front unit bearing design from the very beginning, a conspiracy of stupidity and neglect that pervades to the present day.   Smiley

We can argue that this was a good/bad design forever, but it's a fact, the later design is stronger.  Wink

Get real - everything that goes on in DC is about politics.

You know, for such a generalized statement, I would normally agree. And I would hope that in the place which is the seat of our govt, people would take it upon themselves to be politically involved with the governing of our country, through our representatives, as the founders envisioned. Although Glenn Beck is a political commentator, the rally was surprisingly apolitical, right there in the National Mall.

Beck is just playing the pied piper role, Ed.  First, he, his Fascist News Channel overlords, and the GOP establishment co-opted the real Tea Party.  Now, they're attempting to bring the disenfranchised religious right back into the RINO neocon fold.  It'll work for a little while, at least until Ron Paul announces he's running again for 2012.  LOLOLOLOL   Grin

I put the chances of me voting for a ticket with Palin on it rank right up there with the chances of me voting for a ticket with Hilary on it. Not gonna happen.

Shes an idiot who couldn't even complete her term as Gov. in Alaska.

But if there were the only choices, we would be royally screwed, they are about 10 rungs below Obama on my ladder.

Nah, Hillary isn't done yet.  I bet she runs again.  She will fail (hopefully) but I doubt anyone will take her seriously.  Palin would be infinitely better than Obama.  Sure, dumb shit would get done but at least we wouldn't be on this downward spiral to socialism and we would more than likely have our borders more secure.  There is no way to know for sure, but I'd say we would be better off, not perfect, but better off than we are now with the huge deficit and everything owned or controlled by a near bankrupt country.

Near bankrupt? 13 TRILLION in Debt?? We are already there. My grandkids grandkids will still be paying for all this crap. It will not stop, and even if McCain would have won, we would still be in the situation we are in. just my opinion, and yes I voted for McCain. Vice president is a puppet with no power, a majority of them have been idiots, so Palin could have done the job just fine.

Petey, every time I read these gibberish statements of yours, I get a good chuckle. Firstly you sound like a liberal, with your name calling and all. Fascist, really?? I can't help but to think that you maybe just as ignorant as the liberal left who think that Fascism is of the right. The truth is, fascism is much more like leftist ideology, including centralized control and tyranny. Have you every really listened to Glenn Beck? He is a firm believer in our founding fathers and quotes them often in his editorials. I bet you probably don't know that he has dedicated many of his TV programs to the founding fathers with programs detailing what they did, what they said, and what they believed. Glenn Beck doesn't simply say that it's so, but he shows it to you, in their own words.

There is no doubt that factions of the GOP have attempted to co-op the Tea party, and have rightfully failed, but then again many Libertarians have tried to claim that Ron Paul started the Tea party, as if it was a libertarian cause. Let me tell you what the truth is. The Tea party is not a libertarian cause, or a republican cause it is an American cause. It was created by Americans, people of all colors, religions, backgrounds and political beliefs, who are fed up with the direction our country is going. We are just as opposed to RINOs as anyone else who do not hold to the principals that our nation was founded upon.

While Ron Paul has stopped at calling President Obama a Corporatist and refuses to recognize that he is a socialist or that the goal of Obama's corporatism is to usher America into Socialism, Glenn Beck has not only stated that Obama is using socialist friendly corporations to help push America into socialism, but Beck makes the case by showing us Obama's own words, in various video footage of what he has stated. But he goes even further by showing, in their own words all the quotes of those in his administration, and those he has surrounded himself or associated with throughout his life. Ron Paul is wrong not to recognize that Obama is a socialist. The scary thing is, by refusing to recognize this, Ron Paul has become dangerously exposed to being blindsided by the socialist, marxist left when they implement their plan to fundamentally change America

Petey, watch the program, you might be surprised at what you can learn from him.
