with a diesel? - 4.10's would be terrific, but you'd only need 3.54s.  I tow with 3.54's and a 35" tire mostly because I want the 'gear'.  I'm considering a GV overdrive for ultra sweet crusing when unloaded.  With a 35" tire and 3.54s I'm right at 2000 rpm at 75 mph - I'd much rather be at 1700, but that's me Smiley.

Today was a good day - Nacho's shinier side is safely on the trailer, ready for the haul south.

Came off the chassis nice and smooth (I'm a pro by now Roll Eyes Grin) - here's how we did it -

After unhooking everything, slowly jacked up the body, little at a time, and supported with both the uber jacks...

and the engine crane - worked perfectly and nice and controlled Agree

then Keith's little boy Andy hooked up his tug and hauled the chassis out of the way  Grin - note the safety glasses - we start 'em out early!

but he also couldn't help jumping on and having a gander at all the beef Cool

and the other major parts are ready to load .  We're looking good Mike - everything's good here and we looking good to go.  2 weeks until the road trip{cool}.

no the frame is pretty beat up - lots of holes and lots of 'changes of mind'.  I won't be using it at all on Bud - I'm upgrading to a newer frame and making it a lot stronger by boxing it in, etc.

sam did you ever do a schematic on the wiring harness ? did that sell with the body

It's not a full schematic but I have the fuse and relay 'plot map'.  Plus as we're taking it apart we're labeling all the wires.  The entire wiring harness goes with the truck - even the diesel conversion stuff.

Well I'm happy to report that Nacho's shinier half is in very good hands!  Me and Keith just got back from our weekend trip to Lubbock where we met up with Mike and his wife Bonita, and we backed the trailers end-to-end and winched the body straight across - couldn't have been any easier.  After which we all grabbed some good chow and a couple brews, then we all split and headed for our hotels of choice.  Great trip, and Mike, bonita, it sure was great to meet you two - y'all are a lot of fun and I'm bettin' we do that again one of these days Agree.  I know what you have planned and I really think it's going to be a great gig.  I'll be a watchin! Grin Popcorn

And........I think..........this may be the final pics of the original Nacho.  Oh my.... Shocked....can it really be?!! Shocked....... Grin - absolutely.  Me and Mike each feel really good about how it has all turned out, and we already have plans in the future to have the Gen2 Nacho meet up with Bud - that should make for a good photo shoot Cool Agree

Here's a couple pics of the trip.  First, headed down -

- end-to-end -

I'm pretty new to this forum, and have not posted anything until now.  I just had to say thanks for posting all this info.  I recently bought back my first vehicle ever-- a 1978 RC.  This thread has given me so many ideas!  It will be a while before I start my project, as I have a Jeep Scrambler I'm building for my dad as a retirement gift, and two Harleys I'm customizing.  All this while building a new shop.  But some day, you'll all see my rebuild on here.  Thanks again!!!

...this B.U.D.'s for me...

« Reply #2562 on: November 9, 2009, 03:45:48 PM »

This thread has given me so many ideas!

...and honestly, that is one of the main reasons I posted all of it.  Some of the build was my own ideas that I wanted to try out, and much of it was ideas I had read/heard about from others' projects that I also wanted to try out.  I figured the good and bad, pros and cons, would be helpful for folks who are thinking about going this way or that, and if some of the successes and failures from my build can lend some ammo to making a decision then great.

I have been trying strange stuff long before I did Nacho, and I enjoy attempting things that may...or may not...help out us Dodge fans, because compared to Ford and Chevy there really ain't that much in the aftermarket for Team Dodge.  A lot of it has to be fabricated, and that's how my small business got started.  What's interesting is...in a manner of speaking, Nacho...or at least the body/paint/interior/armor...ended up being my first full-size customer project.  I didn't intend on selling the shell and interior when I built them, but fortunately I get to keep the experience from it.  And if my grand evil plan works out, a few years from now I may start doing full-scale custom project trucks, just like Nacho, or Bud, or Big Mack, or Frank, or whatever my or someone else's mind can dream up.

I had to build Nacho, in both of it's evolutions, to appreciate those differences.  I had to actually drive the thing, feel how things worked and didn't work.  And I learned/discovered a lot about building trucks, and I am looking forward to the next gig.  I'm certainly not a grand expert, but I think I can at least speak plainly about a bunch of mods.  There is so much that goes into a full scale project - so many small pieces of multiple puzzles, and hopefully with enough foresight and lots of thought the end result is a well-oiled machine that works really well.  I'm sure I'll always have something 'in-work' Wink, and that is a big part of what drives me...and I'm sure I'll be in it to the end.
My wife and I have several projects 'on the books', and those are things hanging "out there" that keep us motivated to press on.  I'm mainly the 'builder', but she and I are both definitely 'drivers', and she is great in helping motivate me to actually finish stuff.  She's happy because I'm happy, and vice versa, and dat works out pretty bueno for us, so, we keep a rollin' on Agree.

That's very similar to how I  have been with my harley.  I don't like the pre-fab bolt-on crap.  I do a lot of trial and error stuff in my build ups.

Thanks for the words!  I'll be around on here watching, reading and learning.

I have a couple - not too many of the whole truck, but here's a couple early pics.  I drove it for a few months before the restification began.  Planned to do this project all along, just happy to find a good core vehicle to start with.  Got it for $800.

First look -

Lee you would probably be better off in the PA Chapter as I think shipping from CO would suck, other sources include Car-Part, Dodge Connection (if your doing a full resto) or possibly mod a front to fit. Just some ideas.

This thread was like watching a child from birth, grow into a well developed adult all while having some highs and some lows, then ultimately die out only to be reborn.

Amazing!

Smiley  for me too.  What's especially cool, is the spirit of Nacho in now in my other rigs:  The engine/tranny are now in my daily-driver 'Red', the body has a great new home, and the best hardware from the chassis are going under 'Bud'.  Nacho was my first attempt at a strong, real off-road rig, and Bud will be the 'refined', upgraded version, and much more trail-rated.

Sorry to see the nacho go but glad it has a good home.

I was looking but could not find the materials you used for the rocker panel(sliders) you made, I only saw the 16 ga sheet metal, and 1/4 angle but not the other dimensions.  What size tubing did you use, dimensions you know the good stuff.  When I get back From Afghanistan I have planned a few upgrades, I have a front 60 waiting and some rockers that could use some attention.

Thank you.

'Welcome Smiley.  Wow - Nacho get's a big ole bump.  Don't worry about not finding the dimensions for the sliders - I had to dig through the threads to find them myself Grin.  The good stuff starts on page 14, reply #668 http://ramchargercentral.com/index.php/topic,49434.650.html

The slider itself is 3-inch x 4-inch 1/4" angle iron, and I think the top side is 3" and the side is 4".  The tubing is 1-7/8" steel pipe offset to 'match' the angle iron.

Sam,
Did the new Nacho builder start a thread yet?
Jim

It's funny you should ask Jim.  Just yesterday I talked to Mike - Nacho's new owner - and he mentioned his project is getting closer and closer to coming together, and I do believe he will be starting a new thread for it Agree.  And the coolest part of all this happy stuff is Mike and I have a 'date', per se, at which we fully plan to get Nacho and Bud together for a bit of 'wheeling, Texas style Cool.  Hopefully Trevor will have his 4bt-powered M-37 ready, and I'm also hoping to have Sam (site builder) and his buddies there too.  We're looking at possibly a summer 2011 gig down there somewhere.  Could turn into a RamJam gig No clue Think Yes Agree, maybe.  I'm just sayin'  Grin - Stay tuned Cool

Sam,

I just finished reading all 52 pages of your thread. WOW, it was an emotional 52 pages Popcorn and some really awesome posts.  Just curious if you still live in Falcon.  I know early in the thread there was mention of moving out east.  I live on the south side of the Springs and it would be awesome if I could stop by and check out some of your work, and I'll bring by my beater 79.  Let me know what you think.

So I've been trying to talk a buddy out of buying a Bronco and to instead get an RC when the idea pops into my head, "Why don't I show him everything a Ramcharger can be?" By this I mean show him the NACHO of course! But while I'm looking for it I check into the RC section of the pics are and I scroooooool, click. Scroooooool, click. Scrooool... WHAT!?!?!?! Nacho is on page 3!?!?!?!?! For shame!

Reading the thread for this build made me WANT to save up all my spare change to one day be able to get my own RC or PW. Why is this build not a sticky yet?

Doing so would save me valuable scrolling and clicking time!

I thank ya for the props fellas Smiley.  A buddy of mine in here (KillerBee) has actually archived the thread on his own home computer just in case something catastrophic happens to the site or the weblinks...and we're both trying to find a proper way to 'copy' the whole gig and print it, including the photos, and make a book...maybe two books Grin.

Seriously tho, Nacho wasn't any 'better' than anyone else's truck.  Different, very custom sure, but for me it was a great big successful experiment, and I sure did learn a lot.  There are several 'how-tos' in the thread that I've been asked to make official and I've been a slacker doing that, but I'll get around to it eventually.

The main reason I posted it all up was simply to inspire ideas for everyone else, and to see the results of all the trial and error.

Mike get's to take it to the next level now, a process I'm really looking forward to watching! Smiley Popcorn.

You should definitely do a complete build book, and get it published. I have a 84 /6 Dodge with 4spd. Clutch going and front end needed a rebuild. I ran across your Utube build video and couldn't get it out of my head. Searched for 2 months hoping to find another 80 rc like I had in the mid 80's. Had to settle for a $1000 rusted 88 rc and got lucky with finding a decent 88 rc with a burnt out piston for $500. Dont have the heart to use rusty as a parts truck, and my son has grown very fond of rusty. As many can relate money is very tight because of a messy divorce, but many mods done can be transfered to a non poptop. I can honestly lay claim to being responsible for upping the views by 50; and pausing the video to take pictures. You have revived my love for rc's and both will be modded as money permits. Thanks Mad Max.
