Did your job slow down quite a bit?  Did you ever get your PLS?  I thought you were going to take the test?  A PLS is probably my fall back plan if civil engineering doesnt work out.  I probably qualify for it already.......

work has disappeared!  if it wasn't for other people in dire straits selling off land and people with "old" money buying it up i would have nothing to do. certainly no new construction going on. the test is on the back burner for now.

..... i need to fab up some inner fenders for the front before hitting the mud tho, thinking of doing them in tinted lexan. if you can't make Dennis' my buddy Lynn is having one the next weekend at his farm.

We always made a "pan" kinda thing that fills in the space between the radiator and the front of the motor...we actually still have the "original", a thin stainless plate we started using about 1990...We also always fill the gap between the inner fenders and the frame .....My Dad is the king of sealing out the muck..he tried all kinds of stuff......the whole truck could be covered, but the motor....... maybe a couple of specks on it.... Cool.....

Wow I wouldnt have expected that!  Sorry to hear that.  From What I heard things haven't really slowed down in iowa.  Land prices are at a record high and getting sold everywhere.  There is also quite a bit of infrastructure rebuilding going on too.

in NC 24000 people have lost their jobs in the last 7 months...NC's unemployment rate is 6.9, Iowa's is 4.6. glad to hear not the whole country is in the can.

i've got some heavy rubber mat about 3/8" thick that i'm gonna fill the same gap you're talking about. it'll run up to the sump of the oil pan and will have snaps for easy removal. my buddy Herbie did his fenders on his competition mud truck with Lexan and it works good and you can still see the engine in there. i have a few more accessories to work around than he does tho. the stuff's amazing, you can put in a brake and bend it over 90 and it doesn't crack, and with a heat gun you can form it to contours.

Silo belt works amazing for this.  The farmers even give it away when they replace the belts.

i had never seen it done like that till i was up at the Digger shop a couple weeks back and Paul was building Joey a windshield for his Jeep mud truck. he broke it 90 one way then 90 the other within 2" of each other and it didn't crack. then he formed some wings to deflect the mud on the sides with the heat gun. Paul also did Herbie's inner fenders so i'll be pickin his brain soon on how to build mine. i have 3/4 of a 4x8 sheet already. i think one more whole sheet will do it all. the biggest headache will be building the support frame work. thinking of hiding some red led's in the frame that come on when i turn on the parking lights that'll give a hint of red glow around the engine at night that you'll be able to see through the lexan.

here's a pic of the Jeep, the top is gone and the windshield frame and just has the lexan screen.

BTW..I also remember hearing that black engines dissipate heat better so that could be another advantage other than stealth mode.... Grin

still on the to get list is one of these http://www.outerwearsracing.com/proddetail.asp?prod=113&cat=11445 for the filter and a black cap and wire retainer for the MSD, already have some black MSD plug wires. and i've since painted the carb black, it looks a lot better. the hood will be satin black too like the old muscle cars, i plan on glassing the scoop to it so it'll look like it was born there, no seams or rivets.

Are you gonna put some kinda good foam or something for a scoop plug?? I had a vision of using a scoop like that once and I was gonna make one of those big pans that mounts under the carb. The kind that seals to the hood when it closes.....coolest air possible then!!  Wink

yeah i was going to use something to plug the hole when i hit the mud. was thinking of using some foam like what comes in fuel cells but most of that stuff i've seen is blue, prolly could dip it in some thinned down black paint and turn it black. or i was thinking of just an aluminum block off plate to put in the scoop opening. i considered the dragster pan too.

yep not having an enclosed garage to work in is gonna suck! i was hoping to have mine farther along by now. also starting the new job in Portsmouth Va. the 3rd and 'll be out of town a lot more. i'll have more $ for the project but way less time.  Undecided

i'm gonna cut a hole in the hood so the filter will be exposed above the hood line. i think it'll look good too but Angie is on the fence about the whole scoop thing. i've shown her pics of the old Barracudas to try get the image in her head....guess she'll either like it or lump it cause it's gonna happen. Good luck on the new job!!!
The scoop should look cool with the flat black hood & I like the idea of the air cleaner peaking out through the hood. Some lighting hidden inside the back corners of the scoop would be a nice effect also:D.

any late 80's early 90's chevy 6.2 diesel truck had em. they use the pressure from the ps pump instead of vac. you just plumb it in line with your ps hoses.

nope, i looked at what Napa offered for the 87 to 93 cummins and they were the same part # vac booster i had, the small diameter big block one. i think they used a vac pump gear driven off the engine for the booster.

Now that you mention it.."smaller diameter big block one"..I wonder if the one off my 74 model 2 wheel drive would work..it is the truck the 440 came out of. I wonder how it would work with the 1 ton brakes though. Do you guys think it would be any smaller than the 92 1 ton booster?? I guess when I get the chance..hopefully this weekend...I'm gonna take a bunch of measurements to compare if the actual truck bodies are made different..as in the location of the booster itself.....

i doubt the boosters are different, no matter what year or configuration as far as 2x, 4x, big block, diesel, etc.. you plug in Napa's site they give you the same part number. that was one thing Dodge did was use the same part for several years for several apps.

and the booster has nothing to do with how much pressure you're putting a the calipers, it's the bore size of the master cylinder. the booster just helps your right leg.

yeah i would mark a plumb line up the fire wall from the center of the two frame rails. then from that measure over to the center of the booster hole on both trucks and compare. then maybe mark a level line on the fire wall from the top of the motor mount and measure up to the center of the booster hole on both trucks.

Cool..thanks for the ideas....and the tip on the bore size....I noticed that the master cylinder on the 1 ton is way bigger than the 1/2s though..I guess that just shows that the bore size is bigger...correct?

I still don't understand why they give the same part numbers for the boosters though, because I know from checking the ones that I have, the diameters are different sizes ya know...hmmmmmm... Grin

There is the larger diameter, single-diaphragm, booster used in half-ton trucks.  In 3/4 and 1-ton they use a smaller diameter with 2 diaphragms (creating an extra vaccum chamber) for more boost.  The mc's also have different size pistons/valving if you have the 3500# axle (D44) or 4500# axle (D60).  So you do have to look carefully.  For an RC, however, it will all list the same since they are all 1/2 ton truck frames, and all had the D44 front.

yeah i should have put in there that i was using a 1 ton truck as the constant in that search. just different configs of a 1 ton truck. and for just the booster not the mc. it shows the same booster is used in 1 ton 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drives, gas or diesel.

thanks Mike, i don't have a set date. the new job will have me out of town a lot, i mean a lot! sometimes three and four weeks at a time. if i can just get it where it'll move, steer, and stop i can farm out the rest of what i want to do to it to Jody and Paul. Paul mostly cause Jody goes back out on tour the first of the year. Jody is supposed to come by tonight and drop off his tranny jack, hoped to get the 727,STaK, and driveshafts back in it this weekend.

With the big block, I was using the standard 1/2-ton booster and aluminum MC.  Brakes were 'ok'.  With the diesel, I used the smaller yet deeper booster and the big heavy cast iron MC that came with the '93, and the brakes are better.  Not awesome, but the 36's also went on and I'm sure they suck up a bit more than the 35's.  I'm trying to get smarter on the hydro thing and I'll likely go there.

Keep it up Mike - looking forward to seeing yer rig back on the road amigo Agree.

i've got some heavy rubber mat about 3/8" thick that i'm gonna fill the same gap you're talking about. it'll run up to the sump of the oil pan and will have snaps for easy removal. my buddy Herbie did his fenders on his competition mud truck with Lexan and it works good and you can still see the engine in there. i have a few more accessories to work around than he does tho. the stuff's amazing, you can put in a brake and bend it over 90 and it doesn't crack, and with a heat gun you can form it to contours.

im gonna be doing Lexan inside my truck for floorboards i believe (no more rust out! Grin ). its good to hear that it forms fairly easy.
