"Once a Gorilla, Always a Gorilla"

« on: September 1, 2008, 06:36:01 PM »

I picked this up recently through the popular internet auction we all know but hate,

It is a 2-owner rig sitting for the last 10 yrs.
specs:
1980 Trailduster Sport
360/727
208 part time
Full removable roof
roll bar
full skid plates
almost no rust

First order is to remove terrible 70s running boards and get it running.

I gave 4 magic beans for it, but no title so we'll see if it was a good deal.

Most all the cars were gone but supposedly he had 100+ cars--all makes, and lots of 30s, 40s, and 50s John deere tractors.

« Reply #8 on: October 26, 2008, 10:47:24 PM »

So I spent the long fall break working on the trailduster or the "The Felon" as my brother has dubbed it because it:
1) Killed a 8k winch when while picking it up
2) Fell off the trailer when we were pulling it on the trailer after the aforementioned winch kill
3) Having no title when we were told it had one.
3 strikes="the felon"

It was late so I wasn't able to add the pics, but I will add them tomorrow.  I pulled the gaudy running boards off and dropped the tank to assess the fuel system.  The fuel pick-up is a little grimey and the float is cracked, so  I'll clean it all up, get a float, and button it back up.

I pulled the valve covers and save for the lack of VC gaskets everything looks good, new gaskets and go.  The carb had a huge mud dobber nest, so I cleaned the nest off and picked up a carb kit to freshen it.

On the upside, the transmission and t-case look fresh with whats like only a few miles on them both.  The trans has a rebuild tag riveted to it and a deeper than stock pan on it. The t-case is spotless and sports new gaskets and oil seals.

I put a battery in it and everthing is good as it atleast cranks

I'm waiting on a care package from my brother with an oil pump priming tool, timing light, and new fuel float to make start up easier.

I'll load some pics tomorrow of the progress and some neat stuff I found in the glove box.

Oh no no, the bug deflector is staying on.  I kinda like it, in a weird way.

I got the care package from my bro' and spent a couple hours pulling the distributor and priming the motor. I changed the oil/filter and rebuilt the carburetor the next day.

Pulled the tank down and cleaned out the 5 gallons of lacquer thinner, I hope the sending unit works, installed new float. Re-installed whole assembly and added 10 gallons of premium juice to the till.

When the moment of truth came I turned the key over and it lit almost immediately  Grin

I have some pics and video I will upload tomorrow, just too late and I have to be up in 4 hours to enroll online for classes.

If anybody cares to add there .02

This is for my 80 TD

I can pick up a set of DRW dana's with 4:56's for $500, but I'm trying to keep this truck bearable on the road.

So I found some dana 60's with 3.54's for $800

WDWYD?  (Which Dana's Would You Do)

So I found the culprit as to why the felon would not start, bad carburetor.

Here is the actual reason

After a trip to the local bone yard, where a derelict 83 van gave up it's fuel management center piece, and a trip to Vatozone for a carb kit and valve cover gaskets, she was in tip top shape.

I also picked up some 33" MT/R's to put on after the lift.

Plans are to pick up this 83 1-ton I found for the 4.56 geared Dana 60's, since my other donor turned out to have 3.54's instead of the 4.10's the guy said it had.

Stay tuned I plan on posting a vid of it running tomorrow

wow, I can't believe it has been at least 120 days since I've messed with the felon. I finally got some free time from school.

So I wrenched the rear axle out yesterday in preparation for the 8-lug conversion and 4" lift

Here is what will be going in the rear, D-60HD from an 85 D250 state truck with 43K and a limited slip unit.

I will be the first to always praise craigslist, because it has been so good to me. Here are the dodge 4" Tuff Country EZ-ride springs I picked up last week from a guy thinking they were for Dodge BLAZER!!!
I got home and ran the numbers, the kit is an all spring lift with no blocks, score!

About a month ago I got these 4 American Eagle forged with 33x12.5x16.5 from my dad.

These things are kinda heavy for one person, but I got it out of the way for now.

something about 3/4 ton axles with 33" makes it look so much more beefy than the 1/2 ton with 33"

I agree, but what about 3/4 tons with 36's!!! I have a set of 36x12.5.16.5 hummer tires that might find their way onto this after the initial shakedown 4x4 run in a couple weeks. I'm trying to have it ready for the "Ricky Bobby Reckneck Nationals" in Randolph, KS. so I keep my fingers crossed.  Beer

turkey week progress, despite family and a holiday I got further on the front 44.

Here was the most apparent problem

And as a result the outer stub shaft is toast, too wallowed out to save

I tore the 1/2 ton 44 apart to see if I could use the outer stub shaft and without a caliper it looks like it will work, but the intermediate shaft is longer on the 1/2 ton axle.

yes the outer shafts are the same part number on both 1/2 and 3/4 ton Dana 44's.

The inners on the 3/4 are different and you'll find like I did, hoard up all the spares you can find cause they're discontinued.  I'm down to one spare inner for each side so once they break, I'll be swapping the gears and outers onto a 1/2 ton housing to run the easy to find inner shafts

I didn't even think about that psycoticredneck, that is a good idea, because the bearings, spindles, and out shaft is all the same. I wonder where they make up the difference in the different inner axles, must be in the knuckles.

I was going to scrap this 1/2 ton D44 out, but now I think I'll just mothball it.

On a lighter note, when I bought this 44hd, I was happy it came with Warn premium hubs. However, after taking the OEM spicer hubs from the 1/2 ton and cleaning them up I realized they are better. The gears and everything are made from tool steel, unlike the Warn's which uses cast aluminum.

I got the new ball joints, u-joints, seal and bearings all changed out I'm just waiting on a front traction device to put the axle shafts in and slam it home.

I'll get some pics up as soon as I'm done with finals at school.

from what i've read on here it's the center sections them selves that are differant which affects the length of the inner axle shafts between the std and hd 44's.  Supposedly the tubes are thicker and i'm betting the tubes are slightly different lengths which affects the inner shaft length.  The only thing different on the knuckles is the hd knuckles space the caliper stand out farther to compensate for the larger diameter 8 lug brake rotor as i've swapped 8 lug outers onto a few 5 lug 44's and retained the original inner & outer shafts.

I don't have any 1/2 ton housings handy to measure....since you've got both, take a tape measure to the axle tubes and measure the lengths on both axles and i bet you'll find the difference is what the axle shafts are off.

When I returned home from a long day with some rowdy jr/sr high school kids, I was delighted to see the man in the brown truck had left me a surprise today...

Now if I can just make it to Sat.  so I can get it installed.

I'll take pics.

Where'd THAT noise come from?

Is that only for the front diff? I don't see one listed on their website for the rear.

Thank you bigdog440 and jungle!
More progress for today, a big moment since I have been waiting almost 2 months to get it all back together, back on 4 shoes again.

Things to do still:
  • front drive shaft rebuilt
  • the rear d-shaft shortened
  • steering block studs
  • Rear shocks
  • Aligned
  • bleed brakes

I love this hobby!

TY 2young, the truck has a fair amount of rough areas, dented fenders and scale, but thankfully not much rot.

I have a real crappy version of that trailduster. Its a 79 with the same paint scheme runs great but rusted so bad the sides are falling off of it.

Jungle,
I put a set of 4" Tuff Country EZ-ride springs with no blocks in the rear. Although, the Uber (TY MadMax for the term) main helper spring in the rear pack keeps the rear very stiff with almost no flex.

The tires are 33x12.5x16.5 and there is enough room for some 34" LTB's that I have had my eye on.

I have a real crappy version of that trailduster. Its a 79 with the same paint scheme runs great but rusted so bad the sides are falling off of it.
I know, LOL! I saw you parting it out and really wished the fenders were good, so I could fix mine without needing to repaint them.
