PUT A DODGE IN YOUR GARAGE...

WWW
« on: August 5, 2006, 10:32:32 PM »

I'm building me a NEW Powerwagon daily driver first using a rustfree 78 body that I bought from MoparMan and a 74 PW frame. I've completely stripped, cleaned, and sprayed the frame with 3 coats of Miracle Paint and topcoated that with 2 coats of Acrylic. A complete rebuilt 79 Dodge 3/4 D44 up front with Chevy 8 lug outers for now (D60 in the future) and a 4 inch suspension lift. Tomorrow I'm installing a 14 bolt in the rear and may go ahead and run the new fuel and brake lines down the framerails. Here's pics of whats done so far, I'll post more as the build continues...

Will look Something like this one when finished...

The body..

The frame..

Temp lift blocks for now, will replace with new springs..

It's slowly coming along but it's getting there, got the body on, (I'll have all the bodywork done and painted later at a bodyshop). Next, I'll sand all of the firewall, innerfenders, radiator support down and repaint them before the installing the engine..

Pulled the bed off for the final time, I prepped, primed, and painted the bottom and front of it (SUBLIME GREEN) so I hope that it won't have to be removed when the truck is painted. I'll remove the cab next weekend and paint the bottom and the rear of it. Haven't had much time to work on it lately with my job and all, but I'll be on vacation in September so I'll have some free time to get alot more done on it maybe..

Once you loose the stack of blocks you've really got something there.

Yeah those are just temp for now. Once it's built, I'm putting my Rockwells under it with some custom lift springs. Going to use those axles under another truck..

How much wider are those axles than your stock ones. What is your planned use of the finished truck? Will the wheel base width be street legal? Just curious!!! puttputt56!!! Cheesy Wink

Wow, this is incredible to me, to be able to devote that much time and work on the project.

And I think I am doing well when I replace a bad turn signal bulb.

Looks good, thanks

It will be a street driven truck. The maximum legal width from outside sidewall to outside sidewall can't be no more than 102 inches max. WMS to WMS on Rockwells with the hubs flipped out which is full width on them is 79 1/2 inches. I have two options that I can do to these. One I can run them full width with 16.5x16 wide wheels with 7 inches of backspacing and still be within the legal 102 inch limit for the street. Or, I can flip the rear hubs on the rear axle to the inside which makes the WMS to WMS on it 69 1/4 inches, and then narrow the front axle by cutting out 7 inches from the long side and using a short side axle shaft and keeping the hubs flipped out on it which then makes the WMS to WMS on the front 72 1/2 inches, then I can run 3 1/2 inches of backspacing on a set of 16.5x16 wheels and still be within the 102 limit. I haven't made my mind up yet which way I'll run them. I Still have time to decide that..

Thanks for the dimensions. If you cut the front axle housing that will move the pumpkin more to the center.  Will that interfer with anything, meaning the front drive shaft connection Say like the engine oil pan etc.? Or will the engine be high enough to clear that? With the housing it will be very strong compared to the stock axle housings, plus the gearing has to much lower (high numerically). puttputt56!! Narrowing the front will center the diff exactly, same as the rear. I'll be using somewhere between 16 to 18 inches of suspension lift on this thing so everything will clear with room to spare..

By the photos of the narrowed front axle housing it likes like both side were done. So did you have to have special axles made for both sides?? putputt56!! Huh Wink

The doors are done and in primer, I decided to go ahead and fix them before the cab was removed. They were'nt too bad or at least I did'nt think they were untill I started on them. The passenger side was bent in and had a big crease in it and the driver side had alot of small dents in it where I guess other doors have bumped it alot over the years, and some surface rust at the top of it and had started to pit, I'm guessing it was were the original owner drove alot with his arm out the window. I worked on these things for 5 1/2 days but now they are good and straight. My vacation is over so next weekend I'm removing the cab and get it done and in primer by hopefully Saturday evening and painted by Sunday evening.

Left Side..

Right side...

Here's the right side before I started...

Hehehe, nope I'm not a body man, I drive a truck for a living. This is my first time doing this kind stuff, I guess thats why it took me allmost 6 days to get those doors straight, you might say this truck is the ginnie pig. I have watch it being done before so I had an idea what needed to be done and how to do it. I spent a chunk of change a month ago and bought every type of body tools and three seperate sprayguns just to do this job. I well pleased how it's turning out..

Hey Jim, yeah it's coming along. I had planned to have all of it in primer by now but me having to do my household chores around here and plus it taking so long to get those doors right has slowed me down some. I'm going to try to have paint on the bed and cab by Sunday evening, then I can work on the fenders, hood , and tailgate afterwards.

Super nice truck, just wondering if you were going to use the trim? If not would you be interested in selling the tailgate trim?
                       Thanks,

Well I did'nt get to work on it as much as I wanted to but I did get the cab removed and after I took it off I decided to go ahead and paint the bed to see what it was going to look like. It turned out real good, I like it.

 Shocked

That looks awesome! How much prep work did you have to do to the inside of the bed?

Thanks, It was a big pain, my knees are still sore. I sanded all of it by hand, did'nt worry about every little ding or scratch in it just gave it a good cleaning and a good sanding which took a while to do. Shot the pimer to it then hit with some 400 grit, cleaned it again, tack ragged it, then sprayed it.

Thanks Guys, it will look even better once I get it buffed out. Yeah I started to have it Line-X'ed instead of painting it but It was in such great shape and plus I'm not going to really be hauling anything in it so I just decided to paint it instead. There will also be two 12 inch wide black stripes down the center with about 6 3/4 inches between them too

1980 2 wheel drive that I'm going to build a 78 Macho clone out of, It's straight and is rust free, I have a 89 chassis that will recieve this body. Hope to start on it next year sometime after I finish the Green Machine.

1977 I just bought the other day for parts. It's also straight except for a place on the right bedside and is rust free so I may build something out of it instead of robbing parts off of it.

1978 Powerwagon that I use here around the house. It needs floorboards in it so I'm going to use the Cab off the 89 4x4 I mentioned above and put on it sometime later next year

.

Plus I have a 79 Jeep CJ5 that will get redone maybe in a couple years after I get the others done first.

Thats a 74 Powerwagon that I used the frame from for this buildup of the green truck. That body that was on it went to the shredder after I stripped all the good parts off of it.
