well as far as the antifreeze leak, run a pressure test on the coolant system and see where it leaks. then try a compression test to see if ya have a weak one. might be the carb with the smoke. but either way doing a great job. looks awesome.  Beer

My buddy said that there is a hole under the fan shaft on the water pump that if drained off coolant the seal there can dry out and develop a leak and when the fan is turning it will blow it back and make it look like it's leaking from somewhere else.  So for $33 bucks (and just to be safe) I picked up a new water pump and I'm gonna swap it out.  Still need to figure out the smoke, hope it goes away but we will see.

Right now  all the old weather stripping is out of the doors (sans the door seals)  I put the newer door panels up and marked the holes where I needed to drill the holes for the bottom.  I drilled those out and and panels snapped into place.  Just need to notch the right side a bit to make it sit flush.  So to see what it was going to look like I masked off the passenger door and painted the inside of the door white where it used to be tan.  It looks pretty good.

I need to get someone to help me take the seats out now that I have the holes marked so I can drill those then finish painting the rest of the interior and put in the new weather stripping.  Then I can put the sound deadner down and the new carpet.  I then need to pick up some Bulldog adhesion promotor and "Sims" plastic/vinyl paint so I can change the dash and door panels to black.

I also got the 91-93 bumper brackets in, so I can install the bumper this week then figure out how I need to run the wires for the 4 Off road lights.

That drain hole is where mine was leaking. Put coolant on the harmonic balancer and eventually got bad enough to cover my belts and all my pulleys.

Ok, no big update but I did swap out the the water pump tonight, and I picked up some chrome alternator brackets and put those on.  Was looking in summit for some chrome alternators but they are pricey.

But I am trying to find some pics to make sure I put the brackets back on right cause it looks like the alternator is leaning back a bit.

Got some teasers for you guy before I go out of town.  I had to pull the ram out of the shop so I could work on my dak tonight (didn't finish till 11:30pm, by flashlight no less), replacing the shocks, rotating the tires, and changing the oil before my trip.

The tape on the doors and mirrors is where I'm painting the interior sheet metal. It was tan and it will be white when I'm finished. As happy as I am with the shape the truck is taking I've gotta take a break from it for a while.  I found out tues that my cousin died tues night and all week I've been mourning.  The reason I had to work on the dak tonight is because we are having his wake and funeral this weekend.  After that I'm taking off to the beach to take my mind off things and try to recover from losing him.  I showed him pictures of the Ram a few weekend ago and he was really excited on how it was turning out.  He said he couldn't wait to take a ride in it.......now he never will.  :'(

Well fellas take care I'll see ya next weekend when I get back.

sorry to hear about your cousin.  i gather it was unexpected and way to early in his life

on a positive note..... since he was excited about the direction the truck was going in that seems like a perfect reason to finish out a stellar resto on it to know he's looking down and admiring the hard work you did on it.  outdo yourself and make him proud Agree

hang in there

Thanks for all the support guys.  I just got back from my trip today.  I've had alot of time to think and reflect and while I'm not 100% I do feel better and I'm back motivated to jump back on the Ram.  My buddy has a 98 5.9L Magnum w/ only 78K on the clock that he said he would sell me sans the intake and timing chain cover for $200 bucks.  The only ? is do I put the Magnum in my Ram or do a V8 swap on my dak?  Wink

Nah, I have a sport badge in my grille to make sure my dak isn't mistaken for a R/T.  I'm not a big fan of "clones".   Still up in the air about the motor.

I got the bed adjusted and bolted down today, did some adjusting on the rear bumper as well.  As soon as I get some help taking the seats back out I'm gonna drill some holes for the new mounting points then finish stripping the cab so I can finish painting it.   I gotta get up with one of my buddies and go with him to get the stuff I need to dye the dash and door panels.

I talked to a old Mopar mechanic I knew yesterday at work about my tranny leaking from just sitting and how I thought it was the front seal.  He told me that these old trucks are bad about leaking from around the dip stick if the vehicle sits for a while.  He told me to finish putting it back together then bring it over to his shop and we'll check out the tranny etc together.

Finished hooking all the coolant hoses, belts back up and fired the truck up and let it run for about an hour.   Coolant leak is now gone  but Alternator is still squealing and the truck is still smoking.  I'm gonna swap the alternator out to see if the squealing goes away  then I'm just gonna worry about getting the interior back together so I can take it over to my buddies shop so we can tackle the smoke and leaky trans together.

Ok, got some work done today.  I removed all the old seat belts, removed what was left of the factory sound deadner and I drilled holes for the new seats and bolted them down for a test fit.

I also took some shots of the doors where I'm repainting the insides white.

Now all I gotta do is take the seats back out, mask off or remove the dash and clean and scuff down the rest of the sheet metal so I can paint it.

Took the alternator off today so I could get a new one to see if that gets rid of the squealing.  Then I took the dash out and started scuffing the inside of the cab so I can finish painting the interior.  Now I just gotta decide wether to dye my old dash and stay w/ just heat or find a donor truck and find a complete A/C system while the dash is out.

Ok with the interior stripped out and the back glass and a few other things covered up I laid down the 1st coat of paint on the inside of the cab:

I've gotta pick up some more paint tomorrow.  Them I'm gonna do some light scuffing on this coat then apply a 2nd coat.

See that's funny.  You wish you had painted yours white and when I looked at the pics of yours I was thinking "damn, mine would look good in Red"  Grin

Thanks man.  I can't wait till I get the dash, visors, and door panels dyed black and put the black carpet in and get the seats covered in some type of black fabric.  My buddy done the white/black interior on his 86 and it looks awesome.  I just hope mine turns out as good as his.

Where'd THAT noise come from?

Have you checked the bearings in the alternator? Maybe that's causing the squealing.

I hope so Jungle.

Nah I haven't checked anything.  I know nothing about servicing alternators and there is no one around here who does so I'll probally just take it to O'reillys and use it as a core for a new one.

Ok I made a rookie mistake and didn't pay attention to the wire hook up on the alternator now I can't remember how they hook up.  I was thinking they were different sizes to be dummy proof but they are not.  Can someone take a pic or tell me where each one of the two wires goes.  Thanks!

Well I got the interior wetsanded today. Gonna shoot another coat of color on it and wet sand it again as there was a few high spots that didn't get enough paint.  Then it will get shot will clear and wet sanded and buffed.  Then the weather stripping can go back in while I dye the dash, door panels, & visors.

Yeah you have the one that bolts to the alternator  then there are the 2 wires that slip onto the prongs.  So if that's the case it doesn't matter?  I want to make sure before I try to fire her back up again.

yep thats the case both wires do the same thing/ have the same voltage excites the generating field or something like that. have never really paid attention to which wire went where and have not had any problems.

Kool, thanks for that.  Now I just gotta find another tensioner bolt.  I've done lost it.  Guess I'll just grab an assorted bolt bag from work and see what works unless someone knows the thread pitch and length right off the top of their heads.

Ok I went yesterday and got all the stuff I need to try and finish all the painting I have left this weekend while it's supposed to be warm.

Picked up some high grade wax and grease remover to clean the interior peices
Got 1 can on Bull Dog Adhesive Promotor
3 Cans of SEM Lyndel Black Interior Paint

So today I'm gonna spray the clear coat on the sheet metal, then wet-sand and buff it.  Then I'm gonna move on to the interior peices.  After that I'm gonna repaint my wheel wells and fix the rust spot under the water channel above the windshield.

I'm takin' a lil' break but both door insides have been cleared, wet-sanded and buffed.

I've also dyed both door panels and both visors.  Fixin' to dye the glove box and the dash next.  After those are dyed then I'll shoot one last coat of clear on the inside of the cab, wet-sand it then buff it.  Then all the tape can come off so I can start putting the interior back together.

All I got left to do is wet-sand and buff the clear inside the cab then I should be able to start reassembly.

And vinyl too. I dyed the visors and after they had set up I took one and bent it some to see if the paint would crack and it didn't.  Now if I can just get the dash back in the truck w/o scratching it.

I managed to wrap up the driver side door Thursday while I was off.  I got the weatherstripping put back in and put the vent glass back in:

And while my door pads are out being reupholstered I done a mock up pic to show what the door panels will look like mounted:

And just cause i didn't have a picture of it on my new phone (that's what the pics were taking with), I took another of the motor  Grin
