Tires and wheels (31"or 32"), a small body lift and maybe a suspension lift later on, some side body protection and I am going to try to build a box/tray across the top of the dash (the Toyota LC I have been using has a boughten one and I like it so will try to reproduce one, it has a lid and can be locked. Install a CB radio I have already, seat covers to protect the existing seats, a winch and some extra lighting. That should keep be busy for a while. puttputt56!! Wink Smiley Cheesy Cruise Cruise

Keep in mind when you go to lift it anything over 2inches is going to require a slip yoke eliminator.

I'll keep that in mind but I don't think I'll be going any higher than 2" with a suspension lift and a 2" body lift.  Remember this is going to be my hunting rig.  Thanks puttputt56

You can get away with 31's or 32's easy with a 2" suspension lift and a 1" body lift. Thats all the lift I am running and I am on 33's.

I agree with Dave, Ken -
I have a 2-1/2" spring lift, approx. 1/2" shackle lift, and 1" inch body lift - all this clears 33 x 12.5 tires just fine ... especially for a 'hunting rig', you'd have no problems.

I know I have a CJ which is different from what you all have (leaf springs,) but from what Dave said it seems about the same difference.

In the CJ world lots of people go with over a 1" body lift, but anything over 1" is concidered to put too much stress on the body mounts and will eventually crack them ... don't know if that applies to the newer ones, but something think about ....

Thanks Dave and Mark, the lift will be down the road for awhile. In the purchasing category that is!  I have the Offroad Expo coming up in October 6/7 in Pomona and hope to get a lot of information then.  Of course there is the SEMA Show at the end of October and first part of November also.  I will spend a little more time in the Jeep area this year.

I haven't really done anything with the Wrangler yet, have only taken measurements etc. I have been trying to finish the LUV that I am converting into a trailer first.  Need the room on the side of the garage.  So have been cutting up the front half of the LOV (1980). It is coming along well, have most of the box tubing cut up for the extension of the sides about 15". The tongue of the trailer is almost completed, still have somemore supports and bracing to add. I hope Joey will post the pictures of what I have done so far when he stops by today.

The motor that came out of the LUV is a 1989 Chevy 305 with M/T Dual staggered 4bbl carbs intake on top and attached to a Chevy 350 Auto-transmission.  I was going to build a sand rail out of it. My brother gave it to me about 12 years ago to make a trailer out of it.  At the time I couldn't bring myself around to cut it up. The frames in those LUVs are fully boxed in and the fenders on the bed are fiberglass.  This trailer is going to be very light. I am leaving the fuel tank in and will install an electric fuel pump so I can pump gas out of it to fill up the Jeep or anything that might need fuel for.  The spare tire will go under the bed just in front of the axle. I will install a tool box on the front tongue and make it so it will lift up and forward to make access to the spare tire.  Joey gave me the bumper he took off his Toyota to install on the trailer.

So that is what I have been doing and hopefully will be able to start on the Jeeps front and rear bumpers and racks here shortly!! puttputt56!!

That toolbox is 72" x 21 1/2". Let me know if you need any other measurments off of it.

If that's too wide you could cut it somewhere in the middle and then weld that end shut for a single door box....

Or you could cut it in half  weld new ends on both pieces and put them side by side and it will only be 43" wide.

Thanks son, how much area is in between the two lids?  I like the idea of making them side by side or taking some of the area out in between the two lids and welding them back together. If I go side by side it would be more than 43" you have to have room between them for the lids to go up and down say 44"s.  puttputt56  Wink Smiley Cheesy

The area between the lids is 19" from hinge to hinge so if you just cut out the middle and then welded it back together it would be about 54"  total width and about 44" of full depth box.

So the next time you come down bring it with you if you can.  I think I will cut out only about 12" in the middle and re-weld it back together. That way it will be just about the right size to fix in front of the truck bed and just be the same width as the widest points of the steps on the side of the trailer.  I am going to also make the bed a tilt bed too!! Since I only have two bolts holding the bed on now it will be easy to remove and build a hinge for it. Since one of the springs on the lid is broken I'll install those hydraulic rams to hold open the lids.
Thanks again Joey!! puttputt56  Wink Smiley Cheesy Grin

Here are somemore pictures of the trailer and the bumpers that I am building (just in progress) not complete yet.

I got the plasma cutter out today and cut all the sheet metal for the trailer and started cutting up on the bumpers. Got the hole for the receiver hitch, the ends on one bumper cut to form that angles/tapper at each end. The front and rear bumpers are made out of 4"x6" box tubing 1/8" wall.  I have re-enforced the areas I think will need more material for strength.

I love my plasma cutter, it does a great job much better than a torch and it is faster too.  I cut out the square hole for the front bumper and finished cutting the ends (tapered in two directions). I welded the angle iron on both the bumpers for the chain tie downs, I will add a couple of loops just inside for the actual chain connection points. The angle iron is just for strength and a guide for the trailer tongue chains.  I will cut two more rectangle holes in both for the two anchor connections (will also be used for a tow bar hitch connection points).

I didn't work on the trailer today, but have to do a little grinding of the welds so the sheet metal will set flat so I can weld them in place. I got one side ready and the sheet metal in place to weld so far.

My wife says I can have the Nerf bars off her 90 4-runner.  Told me she didn't like them when I installed them 16 years ago. They keep tearing her cloths (they catch on the aluminum diamond plate steps). So those will go on the Jeep and after I do a body lift will tie them into the side panels for support and protection.

I did a little more work on both the trailer and the bumpers.  I got the sheet metal tacked welded on the support frame and need to remove it to finish the welding (need my son's help lifting it off the trailer if we can. I welded the front bumper tapered ends and made the attachment brackets and now have it on the jeep.  It isn't finished yet but just had to install it anyway.  Will have pictures posted later.  It rained (just enough to get things wet) last night or early this morning. We sure need a lot more here in southern middle California.

As I said I love my plasma cutter and my second best tool that I love is the step up drill bits. I didn't know they made such a thing until I saw it on one of those motor cycle build off shows. I can't believe how much easier it is to use one of these to enlarge a hole. Used multi drill bits in the past to get to the right size hole. Another time saver.

I hope to have more done on the bumpers and will have pictures coming by Saturday when my son gets off work. puttputt56  Wink Smiley Cheesy

Well I have done a little more work on both the trailer and the two bumpers.  I installed both on the Jeep, but they aren't finished yet.  I just had to get them on to see how they would look and fit.  So far things are going great with them, I still have to install the trailer hitch receivers on both the front and rear, install the tubing on the front and install the swing tire carrier on the back plus the rack to go with it. Pictures later when Joey my son gets off work today.  puttputt56

Here are some of the pictures I promised. Thanks to Joey!  I have also added the first tube loop on the front bumper (no picture of that yet). I got the receiver hitches made and will install those tomorrow after doing some honey dues. I also added those hood louvers yesterday. They are there for looks only. The nerf bars on the 4 Runner don't fit so will have to build all new ones for the jeep. puttputt56

Also if anyone out there would like to have the front fenders, doors and hood off that 1980 LUV you are welcome to them. Just come and get them. If not they will just be going to the scrap yard. The rear bumper now is going to be the one that is going to take time.  I have to really think this one through before going ahead with construction of the tire rack.  I almost thought I had already blown it on the location of the hinge point with regard to the tail gate of the Jeep.  But after testing it out, there is enough room for both the tire carrier and tail gate to swing open at the same time. On the trailer I am going to keep the emergency brake functional, so if I have to stop, disconnect the trailer on a slope/incline I can set the brake.  puttputt56!!

More pics:

As you can see it still is all under construction/progress. I am using the existing tire carrier bracket and will have four more bolts to it as I add more re-enforcement to the built tire carrier swing.  The picture of the boxed carrying rack is not welded at all, just cut all the pieces and assembled to see how it will look.  I am building this rack much more heavy duty than the ones you see out there. Remember this is going to carry a 350 pound plus pig/deer one day.  I will be out doing some more welding this afternoon. Thanks Joey for posting the pictures for me! puttputt56 Wink Smiley Cheesy Cruise

I have changed my mind about the design of the rack so am re-doing it.  I hadn't done any welding on that portion yet.  The more I looked at it, the more I didn't like it.  Since it is going to be in my rear view mirror all the time I wanted it to look good too.  I'll post pictures of my new design later. I think it will be even stronger now and look more in proportion to the rest of the tire carrier. puttputt56

I have more pictures of the changes of the rack and hopefully my son will post them tomorrow after he gets off work. It is not finished by anymeans but it is starting to be functional and I think it looks good.  I still need to decide on where and how I want to attach the highlift jack and a anchor bar I made.  I'll take some pictures of the anchor bar and stake system bars too tormorrow (something I learned in Rescue Systems II) and have Joey post those also. puttputt56

Here is a picture of the stake and picket system I made that I want to also mount on the tire carrier along with the high lift jack and shovel. The top end of the stake slides and is the built  in hammer.  If the ground is to hard for that to work I can use a sledge hammer to drive it in, the others are used to tie into the main stack and are tied together with 1" webbing to make even a better anchor. I made several for the Departments Rescue Rig and gave a couple away to friends.

I have done a few more things to the Jeep.  I installed (made) some 1" box tubing along the outside edge of the rear 1/4 panels for strength.  Then installed some 1-1/2" aluminum angle to the top edge.  Now when the top is off (soft top) and my passengers climb in and out they won't damage the side edges.  Then I started installing my side sliders (out of 3/16" steel plate).  I will also add 1" x 2-1/2" box tubing to the lower half as well. This portion is going to be a very slow process. As I have to remove the fender flares and keep re-attaching them to make sure everything fits and looks good.  It is hard to hold and look at the same time by yourself (no help). There will be a lot of welding to these.  I have both the plates cut and the driver's side installed (temporary). I am going to the Drag Races today with my son after he gets off work so won't get much done this weekend. The Drag Races are the Southern Auto Re-Union Races at Famoso, California. puttputt56
P.S. Of course pictures will be coming soon as my son will post them for me I hope!!

I haven't really done much more on the trailer or the Jeep.  I had a Fund Raiser Golf Tournament for the Firefighters Quest for Burn Survivors on Monday and today I hauled the scrap metal from the 1980 LUV to the Scrap Yard so it is gone. I didn't get any takers on the fenders. hood or doors. They are gone now.  I had a retiree's Luncheon Meeting today and a AWS meeting Dinner this evening so didn't get much done on the two projects.  I did do a little drilling of the ten tabs I need to weld to the box tubing (side rock sliders) so those are ready to install. Joey didn't post the pictures I had taken so hopefully when he comes back into town he will do that for me. I should be able to do some work on it tomorrow I think my schedule is open. That is just an update so far. puttputt56

Thanks SpiderRam that I will do!! I hope to have more pictures coming if my son will post them for me. At the end of these projects I will make a list of materials used and most of the dimensions for others to use. Thanks again for the comments. puttputt56

Joey here, got a little behind posting pics so here's a bunch  Grin

This picture is the plate with the 1"x 2-1/2" box tubing temporary installed.

This is the 1" boxing I installed just below the side quarter pan els for strength.

This is the aluminum (1-1/2" angle I installed on the top of the rear quarter panels also for strength and to keep the edges from getting marked up front people climbing in and out.

This is just a picture of the steel plate installed, I wanted the Wrangler decal to remain so I cut the plate down in this area, most others don't do this, this was my choosing to do it that way.

This is a picture of the trailer with the cut down tool boxes installed on their frame work and on the tongue of the trailer, I still have to weld on the backs for the tool boxes and anchor them to the frame work I welded up for them.

Trailer from the rear showing the bumper installed (just tacked welded so far)

Front of the trailer with tool boxes in place and the top on the trailer too.

Passenger side steel plate, the box tubing for the drivers side and the ends box welded in.

Better picture of the box tubing with tabs showingwelded on to it.

I cut out two plates of 1/4 " steel to weld to the existing cross tubing of the jeep to attach with a bolt the receiver hitch and front bumper. The bumper can be removed by unbolting all the bolts although the side connections are tight it does remove.

Rear bumper tire rack swing stop (made out of 1"x2-1/2" box tubing welded the end closed too.

Another picture of the front center plate steel not welded yet.

Welded the light tabs on the front bumper on both sides (2)

Same as above

Picture again of the swing stop, but also i made up a brace for the spindle, I wasn't to sure how good my welds might be to hold all that weight. So I made up this U shaped sleeve then welded it to both the spindle and the main box tubing of the swing tire rack.

The last two pictures are of the slides with the box tubing and the 1-1/4" steel tubing welded in place.  My first go at bending tubing with the Harbor freight tool.  For the first time using it they came out OK I thinks.  I will add spacers between the tubing and the box tubing later.  I may even add some plate steel to fill in between the two and make it a step also.

Again I hope this gets through, last night this site went dead!!  Again thanks Joey for posting the pictures for me!!

Looks good Ken ... you got some serious heavy duty bumpers there ....
I want to make something that's a little closer into the tub ....

Like in your #16 picture (#16 I think - the rear side shot of your rear bumper,) the only bumper I have now is that rear cross member the your bumper is bolted to ... I want something that mounts flush to that ... I also have flush mount tail lights ... I'll try to post some drawings ... when I get them done.

Your sliders above the rear wheels are pretty cool ... although, I hope not to get that close to anything  Grin Grin

All looks good -

Mark thanks for the comments.  Those 1" box tubing just above the rear wheels was not to be a rock slider, I built them for when people get in and out of the rear seat to protect the sides. Hope I don't need them for sliders that far up on the Jeep.  I still have to remove them and weld up the ends and repaint them.  I have been having fun working on both the trailer and the Jeep.  I have all the parts for the passenger side slider cut/bent and ready to temporary weld and install on the Jeep.  Then after they are all ready (complete) I will remove both and paint them and re-install them.
I understand what you want on yours but yours is going to be used for rock climbing and mine isn't.  I ordered some heavy duty air shocks for the rear just to help carry the additional load in the rear bumper and rack. Hopefully I will have these projects (Jeep) done by the end of this week.  The SEMA Show is next Monday; so will be gone for that whole week. puttputt56

Lol - I didn't really think those one inch bars were really meant to be rock sliders ... just teasing with ya.

I have the lights ready to send to you (finally  Tongue Grin) If your going to be gone all next week, maybe I should wait 'till you get back, so someone is home to receive them ... lol, you know how much trouble we've had sending things back and forth  Tongue

 Huh let me know -

Mark that will be great, as I said there is no rush!!  I really didn't think you thought they were rock sliders. Although there is a 1" boxing tubing on the inside also so it might help as a slider I just hope I don't test it out that way.
Is there anything you would like for me to check out at the SEMA Show for you (a manufacture or something) puttputt56

Find out who all is building front Dana 44s that fit CJs!!

Currie does, and so does DynaTrac ... DynaTrac axles cost more than my whole Jeep did  Tongue

Ask Warn if they are still making the rear 44 full floater kit - just wondering.

Thanks Ken!

Hey PuttPutt how much is that trailer going to weight when its done? Just curious since Jeeps don't have a huge towing capacity.

Its looking good keep up the good work.

When I am done with the trailer it will weigh some where around 900 lbs.(the fenders are fiberglass) The tool box weights about 50 lbs, the metal that I added to build up the sides and re-enforce the front of the trailer is another 150 lbs, the bumper is about 25 lbs. (the fuel tank is 15 gal tank,so 120 lbs there if it is full of fuel) I can lift the front tongue and almost stand it on the bumper myself. 95% of the towing will be done with my Tundra not the Jeep. The Jeep will only tow it when I need supplies up on the Ranch for hunting; no long trips.puttputt56

Ken -
Did you weld the lower part of that hinge (the 1.25 dia end) to the bumper, or just around the 2.25" dia. part?
Just wondering -

What size metal is the cross piece that's welded to the hinge?

Thanks

Mark to answer your question Yes! The 1-1/2" x 4" spindle is welded to the bumper  (on top) and is in a sleeve going through the bumper and again welded at the lower end. To remove the tire rack completely I have to remove the top cap (dust cover) and locking nut and bearings, just like removing a hub and drum. I went that route to make sure that point was strong and it would support the weight I plan on carrying( with no movement of the hinge). You could drill a hole in the spindle and pin it in place if your mounting (bumper) area was small enough to let the pin go through your bumper or if your bumper ends were left opened (to have access). The cross piece (main support) is 1-1/2" x 3" (1/8" wall) box tubing. The up right and bracing parts are 1" x 2-1/2" x 1/8" box tubing.Does that help Mark?? puttputt56

I will have a few more pictures of the rear tire carrier and bumper coming soon.  I have added a cam type handle to the swing tire carrier (which gives me 3 points of connection not counting the swing hinge) and will be adding a handle to the upper portion to help with holding and swinging it out easier. Hope to have that welded up by tomorrow so Joey can post the pictures. I also bought some tires and rims from one of the other members of the hunting club. They are aluminum 15"x 8" with Mud & Snow tires 30.5 x 9.5 x 15s got all 5 for $250.00 and they are like new. These came off his Jeep after he put 35" tires and a 4" lift on. The tires and rims I got have less than 1,000 miles on them. These should get me through this hunting season and then I can get some more aggressive tires later.

Well I got the tires and rims installed on the Jeep, yes I took pictures but Joey went home after work (had a head ache) so he will post them Friday or Saturday.  I got the handle made but didn't get it welded on the swing tire rack yet; I'll do that tomorrow morning. Sorry about no pictures yet but they are coming I know everyone likes pictures. The new tires and rims really helped the looks of the Jeep. I also received the air shocks today, so they will be installed tomorrow also. Will have pictures of that also. puttputt56
