So I made the trip to NC this weekend with a crew cab on a 2K trailer going down, and a stripped down frame body tube TD on the way back. I took I81 down and back and it has hills. Tank #1 238 miles on 22.2 gal=10.6mpg (crew cab) 55-63 mph Tank #2 268 miles on 23.7 gal-11.3mpg (crew cab) 55-63 mph Tank #3 185 miles on 16.0 gal-11.5mpg (trailer only) 60-67mph Tank #4 290 miles on 24.0 gal=12.0mpg (TD) 60-67 mph Tank #5 257 miles on 23.0 gal=11.1mpg (TD) 60-67 mph Now the guy that put the seals in the I pump said he needs to "make sure" the final timing is right on the pump. The truck has MUCH more bottom end now doesn't smoke as bad when you put it down for more power. It's pulling the hills better without over heating now at 60mph with a load and I wasn't pushing it. So how do I get more MPGs out of this thing. It was getting 12-14 pulling the trailer before with the same weight before the pump fix.

OK that helps Joe. So where is peak torque on a CTD? OH and I guess I'm going to need a tac on the truck too now......... Hey Leon I need that 618 lockup trans you offered me.

No, I need that 94/95 618 Then when I'm done rebuilding it, you can have my old one and do the same. Where is the peak torque? Well you tell me. That curve is actually from a '93, but the rpm points are about correct. A tach is nice, but you could simply use K.I.S.S. and crunch a few numbers on Sam's handy dandy calculator.

Cool, so 1800 is where I need to be. AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH NO, I think I have first dibs on the 618 my friend..... OK so with 265x75's on it, 57MPH is my goal. I can't drive that slow. I need and overdrive............ Don't you think the pump setting is off for it to drop like this though?

I need and overdrive............ Don't you think the pump setting is off for it to drop like this though? Be careful. You can under gear a truck. Was just reading an article about installing a double overdrive. They dropped rpms so low that they lost 5mpg compared to before w/o the over drive. They found they had to drive atleast 80-85 to get even close to peak torque range, but by then aerodynamics were stealing some mpg, so they could only gain 3mpg back. You have 3.07 when you hit OD with 3.07, it turns into 2.11 According to my math you will need to maintain about 80-82mph to get up into peak torque range. With 3.54s you are looking at closer to ~70mph. As far as the pump, I recommend you go back to the top and watch the timing advance video. He likely set it to stock spec since he used a gauge. You can "eye ball it" 1/8" or what ever it was for additional gains. You are pulling a crew cab+ a heavy trailer, I hope you weren't expecting stellar mpg. That crew cab is sitting back there acting like a giant parachute. My stang weighs less, but more importantly is lower than my roof line. It went right through the slip stream like nothing was even there, hence the reason I only dropped .5mpg. Plus I sped up slightly to get in that sweet spot power band, for me around 62-64mph. Perfect for towing on highway.

I have a pair of D60's with 4:10's Ok tony....what ever axles you have multiply them by .69 and that is your effective ratio in OD. Then you can go to the calculator, plug in desired rpm, effective gear ratio, and tire size, and it will spit out a cruise mph for you. 4.10=2.82 (like driving a vehicle with 2.82s and a tf727/np435) so your rpm will be less than your current 3.07/tf727 but it may or may not still be too high. Your job to calculate.

Well at this point I'm just going to work on getting the pump timed/dialed in and go from there. I forgot to "scratch" a mark before he pulled the pump so I knew where it was. So for now I'll just have to remember 57MPH. But I think I'll be in the 60 range. Thanks Joe.

That could work. I'd need some flip-up headlights and air tunnels for the rad. I could do that.
